[LE] Undoing another mod's changes?

Recommended Posts

So this mod recently released for Special Edition: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/49352?tab=description

I love it, but the author made a few changes that I'm not a fan of. Coming to mind immediately are the changes to existing locations and the replacement of some Hold Guards. I would like to keep it in my load order, but I can't live with those changes for my own mod development, compatibility with other mods, and my own preference. I've asked the author about this in the comments but I never got a response and now I'm under a page or two of other comments. Don't think I'm gonna get any word from them.

So is there a way to undo these changes within the mods that isn't entirely time-consuming (like manually removing additions and copying the removals by hand)? I feel like I remember something like this is possible with TESedit, but I barely manage to clean my own mods with that thing, let alone make any real edits.

So is it possible to "undo" changes, and revert things to their vanilla state while preserving the rest of the mod?

I'm a mod hoarder by nature, so if you have it, just uninstall that version and install the previous version

The only time I delete a previous version of a mod, if after I've tried the newer version of the mod and it still works the way I want it.

I usually keep two older versions like

1.0

1.1

1.2

And I'll delete the 1.0 version, then if the mod updates again, I'll keep

1.2

1.3 and delete 1.1

Yes, super easy. And, if you just move the two guards to a new spot even better. As long as the two are not scripted into some kind of story line you should be able to just remove them. Keep a back up and give it a shot. That mod is now forever just your personal mod however. Ya, just load up the kit. load a file/mod (top-left) ... double right click the mod, so it is the active file and load. Move the two and save. Easy as that. If something isn't working revert back to your save.

the best way to undo changes is with TES5edit. But of course you have to know what you're doing.
For example reverting the house guards: open the mod in TES5Edit (no other mods exept for vanilla/DLC files).
On the left side, expand the changes of the mod,
Changes to existing objects should be highlighted in yellow/green.
For the house guards you should look under actor.
Just remove the entries you don't want and they will be vanilla again.

TES5edit is a mighty tool, make a backup and just try it out, it is not that hard to learn.

TES5 like ANaj said is the easiest. Just load only that mod, expand the tree on the left and it will show any changes or additions that mod made to the Vanilla game. Delete those changes and it reverts to Vanilla. It's pretty easy. Less complicated than cleaning really. You could try making only a few changes then testing before making more changes. If you delete too much you can simply redownload and try again.

The creation kit is about one of the easiest 3D kits to work with you'll ever see. Do not fear it. It is a wonderful tool. I myself would NEVER edit a mod with TES5 over using the kit.

TES5 is however a great way to spot errors. The edit he is talking about would take about 2-3 min.

Unfortunately it takes about 6 minutes for the CK to load :D
