  1. In the end how big Skyrim will be (feel) will rely upon good map design IMHO. The way they laid out Morrowind was excellent because, especially at lower levels, you had to travel farther and longer to get places even though in reality they were just on the other side of that range of rocks, thus making the world seem huge. In the two most recent Fallout games this effect was attempted but botched royally (especially in New Vegas) because rather than using mountains or bodies of water in many places they just threw in immersion-killing invisible collision barriers. "I can see the entrance to the vault right there, but obviously the developers don't want me there yet because there's this invisible wall here. So much for role-playing..."

It's my hope that since Skyrim is a rugged mountainous region the formula of map designing used in Morrowind will be revisited. Also, I think I'd like to revisit Solstheim, but knowing Bethesda I'd imagine I'll have to wait for a DLC for that.

  2. With what I was able to learn from the readme, I created my orc partner, Basher, and he works great. It was a scary process, even with the instructions, I'm no modder.

I was intimidated by it at first as well, but now that I have a few under my belt it's almost like second nature. Unfortunately, I never have enough time to create all the characters that I have ideas for.

  3. Are you running Shivering Isles with any kind of mod that gives you a recall spell?

Once I used a recall spell to travel from the Shivering Isles back to Cyrodiil rather than using the "strange door" and afterward I could no longer fast-travel and got CTDs and had to go back to a prior game save and use the proper door. This is an old issue with the game that has never been fixed.

  4. I would also advise that if this is your first time at this you don't try to merge or alter anything; there are too many somewhat unpredictable variables involved in all of that. I recommend that you simply get the hang of how to install the mods properly and how to recognize if they are working in-game or causing problems. Once you get the hang of it you can then tinker around on your own and learn more. To simply download and install a mod from the Nexus you shouldn't need the GECK for anything.
  5. I can't imagine that it will suck. The first release will probably have more bugs in it than an anthill, but I'm confident that plot and gameplay will be of the quality we have come to expect from Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise.
  6. You said you have NO active files? The .esm has to be checked at least in order to do anything.

To save some trial-and-error time you might try this: load the .esm in the construction set and then, before you have done any work, try to save. I'm pretty sure a window should then pop up asking you where you want to save your work.

Also, you might want to check here to be sure that you have the most recent version and that it is compatible with the version of the game that you run.

  7. Wow... it's been quite some time since I looked at any Morrowind mods, so please don't think ill of me if I'm wrong about this...

If I recall correctly, Better Heads replaces all the default heads while Westley's Head Pack adds new heads that do not affect the defaults or Better Heads if it's installed.

  8. @Thandal:

Yeah, I kinda suspected that it was just simply an issue of too much stuff (i.e. graphics effects/character actions) happening all at once. While my character is a warrior, I had two spellcasters with me for that battle and I had a tendency to shapeshift myself as the boss changed forms as well. Lots of stuff for a game engine to run there. (And yeah, I made my .exe large-address-aware also.)

  9. I sent this to a friend in a PM, but I decided that I should share it publicly as well in case it will help anyone or in turn anyone has any input or fixes for this.

With Dragon Age Origins I've had a few CTDs, but nothing too terribly annoying... until today.

Without giving any spoilers, I'll say that I made it to a big boss battle involving an enemy that you have to kill in like four or five different reincarnations before he's actually dead. A tough battle depending upon how you do it, sure. Well, I kept getting CTDs during this battle, most annoyingly so when I was on the verge of winning or even had won and the cutscene was supposed to start. I went through this like a dozen times, sometimes just plain losing the battle and other times nearly winning and getting a CTD as a reward. So I did some troubleshooting, closing any other programs I had running at the time ('cause I do tend to get a bit arrogant with my memory and processor, but they have their limits like any others) and even went so far as to restart the system to make sure the RAM was purged. Went back to the battle and again had CTDs. So finally I got annoyed enough after wasting like an hour on this one issue to go here and get some console cheats so I could finally get on with the game.

Normally I only use console commands to test mods because things like walking through an entire game in godmode just sucks all the fun out of it for me. But in this particular instance I really felt like I had little alternative. And I suspect that the issue may be directly linked to that particular battle because I haven't had any such recurring CTDs since. So just a heads up: if you get to the battle at the center of the Fade and it keeps crashing, then likely my suspicions are correct and that part of the game is just plain buggy.

  10. LOL... I must be trying to do all the hardest parts first. I went all the way through the werewolf quest until I got to the ghost of the little boy and could not beat all the undead that pounced on me. So then I went to the mage tower and I've fought my way finally to the center of the Fade. I'm still working on trying to beat the boss therein. Maybe I should have went to the places with the fetch-this-and-that quests first...
  11. Using the GECKs is not the issue. What would be illegal is for example copying a weapon, extracting its textures and meshes from the FO3 BSAs and then adding it directly to Fallout New Vegas. That's the kind of stuff we're saying is illegal. Now, if you want to take a weapon from FO3, retexture it and maybe even modify its meshes a bit, and then add it to Fallout New Vegas and upload it, I doubt anyone would have any problems with it at all.
  12. Well, ignore people trying to help you if you want, but if you rip something straight from FO3 to New Vegas without modifying it somehow and then upload it here they will ban you and then you'll be saying: "Hey... those people I was insulting were right after all."
