    I couldn't find the exact quote, but Sir Alec Guiness is reported to have said this (or something very similar to it) not long before his death:

    I think that sums up the race issue very nicely.

    That being said, my opinion...

     

    Well, someone's already mentioned the Morgan Freeman video, which I personally like. While I certainly don't look to Mr. Freeman as the end-all be-all for how someone should live, he makes sense sometimes.

     

    On to the whole issue of reparations, 'guilt' and whatnot of all this nonsense. There's this one man in particular that I work with, who is black, and has a chip on his shoulder that apparently as a white man I owe him because my ancestors (who, by the way, didn't come to the US until the very end of the 1880s, from Germany) mistreated his ancestors by imprisoning them and making them slaves.

     

    Now, there's another man I work with, also black, thinks he's an absolute moron. As he says 'What's in the past is past and we'd better not forget it, or we'll end up there again, but for the love of Pete, shut up.' The last bit I changed to censor some profanity and to remove references to his choice in religion. I'm a pretty simple guy, and this makes some great sense to me. I'm all for teaching about all histories, all religions, and making everyone aware and capable of understanding others.

     

    So yeah... uhm... I was going somewhere with this, but I missed that train of thought when I noticed House was on.

    So, as it stands, I see a few ways we can fix this.

    1) We just start shooting complainers.

    -While this is the easiest method, and sometimes not a bad idea, it's kind of unethical to go around shooting people for being stupid. It's not a crime... yet.

    2) Start teaching the whole story, and both sides of it, and teach people to make their own opinions.

    -Most of the issues now stem from long-held prejudices that their great-great-grandpappy told his son, who told his son, who told his son, who told his daughter, who told her son to hate these people because you're better than them. At least, in the US, it does. I can't speak for other countries and such. I don't really know how to further expand on this point, I think it's kind of self-explanatory.

    3) *Note: This one is not to be taken seriously. Relax.* We can just go back to slavery, human trafficking, segregation, Nazi-ism, et cetera, et cetera and then their opinion really doesn't matter and we'll be alright.

    -Solves the problem pretty easily, though I think we'll hear some complaints from the lesser-halves, but that's irrelevant.

    The education system

    1. The person must have a desire to learn said subject.

    2. The person will then go out of their way to attain the knowledge necessary for competence.

    3. The person will gain experience by applying their knowledge to different situations.

     

    4. The person will then be competent enough to teach, thereby speeding up the learning process for any student willing to learn.

    5. The person will never cease to learn new things, and never cease to teach new things in new ways.

    I am rather glad you found this section and started posting.

     

    I agree with that list for sure, glad you posted that.

    I shall, for once, concur with you, Marharth. I definitely agree, and as I am still at the university level, it's not been so long since I was in a high school classroom.

     

    I was always an 'honor student' (stupid title, I applied myself more than most, and I was lucky enough to get a nice roll of the die in the gene pool so things came easier to me), and I'm about to go into grad school next semester, which I might follow up with a doctorate if I'm crazy enough to think teaching is actually a good idea.

     

    I think, in some ways, the former Soviet countries, like Belarus, kind of have the right idea. They go to school until they're... 12? 14? One or the other, I forget which, and at that point they take a competency test and either go into military, trade school, or continue their education for higher ed. degrees. While I don't think that particular plan works well in America, at the moment (due to a lack of a lot of manufacturing jobs), something similar would probably work well.

     

    I'd suggest something like: they go school long enough to learn important, common-knowledge and practical application skills, in combination with their academic classes and arts. Then, say, at the middle school level (that's after 9 years of school, for the rest of the world), they make their decision based upon the experiences they have had, and decide what they want to do, basically. If they like learning, they go on to the high school and then university level. They prefer some trade they got some experience with back earlier? Cool, drop them into that trade school and get them a good job. Maybe they don't want to go into a trade right away, or they're undecided, let them enlist for a few years, they'll get a lot of exposure to different things, different people, and will hopefully become more aware in the process.

     

    Now, those choices will be all be choices, I don't see any point in forcing someone to something they don't want to, because you'll never get the same quality of job as if they enjoyed what they do.

    I'm not quite sure how old you are, but I vividly recall the phrase 'war on terror'. The word war implies war. Call me crazy. Korea: We never declared war, we spent a few years over there (exact number I forget), but it wasn't war! Yeah... I don't know about you, but I call it the Korean War, not the Korean Police Action.

    Good for you. I for one am sick of the "if you've got nothing to hide..." apologetics. It really is sickening. If our founding fathers had held such an attitude we'd still be singing "God Save the Queen."

     

    There are lines to draw, in every fight. My line hasn't been crossed yet, but I assure you, it lies there and will bite someone in the butt if they ever have the misfortune to cross it. It is a line for every person to draw for themselves and decide when to say they've had enough.

     

    "When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation..."     You're including war-time actions into this. There are exceptions lain out in the Constitution under the 'necessary but proper' clause that allows for some of these things. That being said, I have no problem with torture, and I'm not really sure it was ever outlawed, except in the Geneva Convention, which isn't legally binding by the nature that there is no armed body to enforce it. They are the rules of a gentleman's war, which is not currently being fought.

     

    As for the various Muslim-related things: you are guaranteed the right to practice it, you are not guaranteed acceptance of your practice. The hatred is due to ignorance and stupidity on the part of Americans, wholly and completely.

     

    4) Wire tapping? If your wires are being tapped, chances are you're up to something. I don't care if the police hear what plans I made for dinner next Tuesday. I don't even care if they hear that my grandmother's currently suffering from bone cancer. Airport security can frisk away, I've got nothing to hide. They're always arrested without trial, but whether they go to prison without trial is a different story entirely. Seizure of property is often involved in arrests, depending upon the situation, the arrest, et cetera.

     

    8 ) Again, war-time allowances. It's being done to enemy combatants, not civilians.

     

    9) I understand why people would be bothered, but I'm not. I've been to college, I'd run through the terminal naked if I had to.

     

    As for the ownership of weapons. It's still important, and besides, if it came to any sort of rebellion, we're not about to line up and match their force. You fight the gorilla war that the US has never been able to win. You bring the Vietnam war to America and you fight it that way. All the helicopters and fighter jets can't win a war if you can't find the enemy. As for taking out a tank, I could probably come up with an idea if you gave me some time and a reason. I lived out in the country, we fish with dynamite and C4... (not really, but I'm no stranger to either of them)

    I'll drop back by just to say this:

     

    You're blowing things out of proportion there.

     

    IF the US is profiting from control of poppy fields, cool stuff. I really don't mind.

    If you're so concerned about your rights being taken away, buy a gun. Buy 20 of them, whatever you want to do.

    I've not lost any freedoms. I don't know what you're talking about. I can still:

    1) Practice my religion, say what I want to say, write what I want to write, and gather with my peers on non-private property as I wish.

    2) I can, and do, still own my several guns.

    3) I'm not housing any soldiers, except my cousin on occasion, but I invite him over.

    4) Never been searched or had property seized illegally.

    5) Due process... hmm... never been arrested, I'll just skip that one. Any ex-cons can chime in here.

    6) Trial... again, not my area of expertise.

    7) Aaaaand again, not my area.

    8 ) I don't really define excessive bail, and I think $5mil is more than reasonable for just about anyone, and sometimes more, if they can afford it.

    9) Hmm... I've not ever had any sort of rights violated that weren't expressly mentioned in the Constitution that I didn't think was right. Yes, even all that stuff with the TSA. I fly pretty regularly.

    10) I don't recall the states being denied any rights lately.

    Stupid question, coming from someone who considers himself computer-savvy. That being said, I still don't know how to do it. I'm looking to make a .jpg I found on the web an .ico to use in a program I made in Visual Studio. I know how to add the .ico, but it ONLY accepts .ico's. I've googled it, but I get tons of vague explanations.

    Personally, it never bothered me until I saw how Witcher 2 looked. I think that kind of raised the bar, because if they combined Witcher gameplay AND the improved graphics, it means others can do it too, and just didn't. For me, they need to make the game worth playing. Rarely is that through graphics, though graphics are cool. One of the most amusing games I've ever played was Dwarf Fortress, which has ASCII for pretty much everything. Same with Liberal Crime Squad, also by Bay 12 Games, which has a little more of a UI to it, but is still entirely text-based. However, assuming the quality of gameplay from Witcher 2 holds up to Witcher 1, it'll be somewhat like the RPG version of Call of Duty, kind of setting the bar and standards for other games to try and catch.

     

    Graphics are popular because imagination is lacking. For me, I can fill in all the details for you if you want, just give me a story and something fun to work with. And honestly, even having seen the Witcher 2, I'd go back and play Call of Duty 2 if I felt like it. For me graphics isn't a deciding factor, though I know plenty of people who it's the end-all, be-all for them, even if the content blows.

    I am sorry to disagree with you my friend but if you parse RZ1029's answer to my post he is not being tongue in cheek, which is unfortunate. Dark humor I can appreciate, but I think he is serious which is quite frightening.

    I do not mean that literally, but more along the lines of I would rather a few innocent be punished than a guilty man go free. And I'll stand behind that, even at my own expense, were I the innocent falsely accused. As I said before, I would hope the justice system would be less flawed than it is now, and perhaps attacking various the corruption that is definitely present, if not entirely evident, in the justice systems.

    A little on the dark side even for me, the upside is that you would get a few truly guilty. I have to admit that you have a real 'Judge Roy Bean' approach to solving crime. I presume your post was tongue in cheek? If so, you have a truly dark sense of humor, if not..well prefer not to contemplate that.

    As far as the innocent man, I can't deny that's a flaw in the system. That being said, I would hope that the way it is done in the US justice system 'innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt' would be less flawed than it is, but we're human and imperfect.

    Well my good sirs and madams....

     

    I have a very simple solution for you. It involves a .45 bullet and the back of someone's head.

     

    Now, I don't mean everyone. Tax evasion shouldn't mean death. Same with petty theft and whatnot. Murder, aggravated assault, sexual assault, rape, attempted murder, and repeat offenders, even of petty theft are the things I'm going after in that sweeping statement. Manslaughter is kind of a gray area, I'm not really sure that that's something to be so harsh on, unless it was blatant negligence. (READ: Drunk driving, failure to properly maintain equipment, et cetera. Things that could be avoided if they had just followed the rules, so to speak.) Note, I do not include the 14 year old and the 18 year old dating in the 'sexual assault/rape' categories. Appropriate? Maybe not. Illegal? Eh... I don't think that's for the law to say, that's a parent-child issue there.

     

    I'm not a fan of second chances, but I'm also not a bloodthirsty and unforgiving individual. I believe prisons work in some cases, which is why I don't do the across-the-board execution of criminals. Also, I do NOT count something like marijuana possession or use into this. Do I think it's a good idea? Eh... not really, but I don't see it posing the danger that something like illegal methamphetamine does. (Yes, I realize there are legal uses for it as medicine.) Honestly, legalize it and you've freed up a lot of room in our prisons. And I don't even think that meth/cocaine/LSD users should go to prison, but should instead be sent into rehab programs. Prison doesn't have the facilities they need to break what is likely a very powerful addiction. No optional early check-out, etc. Now, this would also require some government funding, but rehabilitation means functional individuals able to pay their costs and carry their weight, versus sitting in jail and leeching government funds.

     

    This also would help with some drug dealers/cartel issues, etc. in the US specifically. Marijuana is one of the largest cash crops (once reportedly the largest) because of the massive return on investment. Legalize it, add them to the list of FDA-approved whatever they do and regulate it just like food and medicine. And as a part of that, continue operation against the use of the other illicit drugs, which you can now increase effort in. Hopefully, as a part of that rehabilitation that other users would go through, they could break their addiction and when there's no business in the game anymore, the cartel's pack up and go home. At least, from the US.

     

    Now I realize the practicality of a lot of this is slim to none, especially as most people aren't a fan of holding mass-executions, even of darkest of individuals in the prison system. However, I do think this would resolve a lot of our problems with society. Draw a hard line and hold to it. And draw that line across the board, none of these stupid celebrities in jail for a night for what would put someone away for a year. Drug use/possession? Jail them, same as anyone else. None of this stupid house arrest and whatnot.
