Not a fan of the forced 12 character passwords
Arthmoor replied to Usmovers02's topic in Site Support
I had to change a couple of my accounts to use phrases because the random stuff I had KeePass kick out was too much of a pain to enter on my phone when needed. KeePass indicates those accounts with the passphrase on them are composed of a lot more bits and are thus far more secure. That doesn't mean I'm gonna suddenly switch everything to use the same passphrase though cause if someone DOES manage to bust it then everything using it falls quickly. So most of my logins are random strings of garbage 30+ characters long. -

+1 for KeePass. I've been using it ever since the second Bethesda hack (and first Nexus hack in between) and I regret nothing about that decision. If someone gets physical access to my PC, I'm far more screwed than what may happen to my accounts as a result of that. Mainly because they're not gonna be able to do it without me being here in the first place. -

I'm not sure whether you realize it or not, but traffic slowing to a trickle would be beneficial to their bottom line. Less bandwidth used = less bill for that month. And you're quite wrong about people going somewhere else that's free. There is no place else that even comes close to what Nexus offers because the various modding communities for years have basically allowed a monopoly state to form in the first place. Which at this point is probably going to be fine by any of us who give 2 f*#@s about the communities we're involved with, and if you really must know, DPs are a pretty darn big incentive for those of us who could actually use the money to remain here even if certain things the site does annoy us to no end. -

Wonderful idea. Let's go back to paper and pen in the digital age. It may have been a sarcastic suggestion, but it would work. Just because it's an old method doesn't mean it's a bad one. Cause if someone breaks into his house, the list of passwords for all his websites is the last thing he should be worried about. -

I seriously doubt any of them would, but I'd be interested in knowing what they'd supposedly need before they paid for a sub or got lifetime. -

Actually I think he has. As have I. It's definitely NOT a legitimate means for distributing files and is going to be 10 times more annoying than anything Nexus is currently doing. Every download I've ever seen there has at least a 30 second timer on it unless you pay for premium. No way in hell I'd ever provide them enough information to drain my bank accounts with. Fact: https://imgur.com/a/C21dxeV Now I am awaiting your fact. Your "fact" is unverifiable. Like I'm supposed to believe that pixelated mess was you downloading something? Especially when it doesn't jive with what I've seen with my own two eyes? You people are so desperate to cast Nexus as the evil bad guy here but you're bending over backward to shill for one of the most evil internet sites there is? can confirm that he is correct. mega requires no silly things, and it downloads much faster, for free, than Nexus. sorry mate. you are lying to yourself and everyone here. Nope, but keep telling yourself whatever fits your agenda if that's what you want. -
Can we just "undo" the recent big update?

The source being their numerous changelogs. -

There need to be valid alternatives first. Reputable ones, not known warez portals like Mega. Not sites known to be author-hostile like ModDB. Or sites full of porn like LL that will get your work associated with the seedy side of modding. Maybe if you presented some actually viable choices your argument might hold some weight. Oh, and the old adage holds: If the product is free, YOU are the product. Actually I think he has. As have I. It's definitely NOT a legitimate means for distributing files and is going to be 10 times more annoying than anything Nexus is currently doing. So basically you're saying it never happened. Got it.
-
They could, but this issue has been around since before Christmas so blaming the holidays was always an excuse to begin with :P
-
Uh, no. Bethesda does not do anything of the sort with regard to what authors in the CC are allowed to release on their own time. Unless you have a direct source for this rumor about mod removals, you should stop spreading this around as though it's a fact.
-
It only seems like nobody is commenting on it. The complaints are all over Discord and have been since the staff broke for Christmas and the site speeds went to hell.

Well we wouldn't all be in this position had people not been so hell bent on making Nexus the only place to get a good portion of the mods that are here. Diversification is better for the community than a de facto monopoly, but any time I ever brought this up I was treated like some kind of pariah for daring to suggest it. So here we are with Nexus holding all the cards. Whether we all like it or not, that's just how it is now. It's not realistic to hope for or expect any kind of large scale replacement for it to come up. ModDB would be a joke for Bethesda games since it barely has anything for them there now and SSE isn't even represented there. -

You'll be back soon enough considering there is no alternative. What about your own AFKmods ? Is it not an alternative ? It's an alternative for my mods, sure, but for the size and scope of EVERYTHING on Nexus? Not even close and highly unlikely to ever be. So maybe we need to know what kind of alternative the now deleted user was thinking of :P -

Guaranteed to be way more to this claim than you're admitting to.

This is an entirely self-inflicted situation you have here. If there's harassment, you're harassing yourself, and willingly too. -
In response to post #76016883. #76019668 is also a reply to the same post. Except I think it is. Either you're wrong about this, or you just don't care to explain what you mean. So many discussions could be nice and friendly if that happened more often. Maybe you're addressing an entirely different thing here and your explanation could clear that up instead of leaving it to the masses to interpret your meaning.

In response to post #76012348. You know, if you can't explain it or are wrong about this you could just say so :P

In response to post #75991243. #75998803 is also a reply to the same post. I'd suggest you inform your bank that 6 digit passwords are easily cracked instead and get them to improve things. After all, the data in that bank account is far more important to you than the account you have here.

It's the same level of supposed inconvenience that has existed for 10+ years for non-paying members. You're just having it pointed out to you now. For now. Once they realize the costs involved, it won't remain free and limitless. And never forget - when the product is free, YOU are the product.
-
So why is no other website that I know of doing it? Like, I'm downloading a ton of files but never came across any site doing something like this in such an obnoxious way. Because right now the Nexus datacenter is having issues with packet loss at their end of the chain. So everyone is experiencing delays in page loads and downloads because of all the error corrections that are happening in transit. Boycotting Nexus isn't the answer either. No viable alternative to them exists anywhere and no such site could rise to replace it now without employing similar measures to get the leeches to pay.

My thoughts on Premium - The Site - and some misc thoughts.
Arthmoor replied to Mixter213's topic in Site Support
The solution is simple. Pony up some bucks. I don't see why there needs to be any argument at all about what Nexus is doing, which is no different from a metric buttload of other sites do in order to gain subscription support. Keep in mind that such methods would not be used if they were not effective.
