  1. Thanks, got it! (you'd think I'd been here long enough to figure that out myself :wallbash: )
  2. I disabled display of avatars due to an irritating outbreak of animated sheep, but I can't seem to find the option to re-enable them. "My Control Panel" just goes straight to "settings", where there's no avatar option. Am I just being dumb??
  3. No dice. The island STILL isnt there... I really dont understand what could be causing this :( I might just have to except not playing SI... You might need to go through the whole uninstall/reinstall thing again, this time following Bben's reinstall procedure, here >>> http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240 Sometimes stuff gets left behind in the registry, even if you've followed the 'proper' uninstall procedure. This can affect reinstalls in unpredictable ways. Unless you have a corrupt disk you should have no problems with the GOTY edition, and you'd expect a corrupt disk to invoke an on-screen error message during the installation (and yes, don't put it in Program Files  )
  4. Well, I guess this kid's loving the fact that there are 16 pages (and continuing), including at least one long essay, all about his very own self on this site. I honestly don't understand why this hasn't been locked. Dark0ne could always keep us up to date on a separate locked thread of his own.
  5. Gaah! Migraine webpage -- dark grey text on black. Why do they do it? Is it a gamer thing?? You can change that, I believe. Scroll down to the bottom where there's a dropdown box that says 'TESA Advanced' and change it to something you like. Ah, OK thanks  Yeah the change works fine. It does look like a very useful site & I'd hate not to be able to make use of it

  7. "And the modders on the forums were fags...." I'd avoid both that word and that attitude in future if you want help from others on this site (and to remain unbanned).
  8. You could ask for help in the Fallout 3 Mod Troubleshooting forum, or post in the threads associated with those mods (if you downloaded them from here).. http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/forum/288-fallout-3-mod-troubleshooting/
  9. Being stuck with native-resolution is true for flat screens generally. Us old-timers still viewing glass have more options in that respect
  10. "Don't be too sure about 'exact copying' either, sad though it may be, though generally, I think you're pretty much safe as long as the copy is for strictly non-commercial use - i.e you aren't going to try and make money with it." Non-commercial use is no protection against accusations of copyright violation (although it would affect claims for financial restitution); also copyright law covers 'derivative work' as well, so inexact copying might still be covered. Also be aware of trademark law, which is another potential pitfall. "..parodies are generally protected (although you still can't rip the original material)" You could rip original material for purposes of mockery, actually, but you'd have to be dead careful about the parody defence (note; defence -- it doesn't mean they can't get you up in court) if charged with copyright violation. The acceptable boundaries for that are rather tightly defined.
  11. A mod clearing the streets in bad weather would be good, actually. It would probably interfere with plot scripting in some circumstances though (e.g. having to interact with certain characters at specified times & places).
  12. "Once you've read one TOS, you know all of them, if you know what I mean." Doesn't apply here though. This site runs a tighter ship than most other gaming sites with regard to good manners and bad language, for a start. Also the instaban for piracy-related topics is harsher than some other websites (and I'm OK with that, personally) I don't know how you could force new applicants to read the terms prior to registration though. I guess a lot of them just want to sign up asap to download the mods.
  13. Start a new thread on this subject, and post your mod-list in the thread.
  14. That link is invisible to anyone using the white background skin.
  15. I don't get too much into the roleplay thing, but I do like to leave my character & companion(s) at an inn or camp when I close a session. It seems right somehow not to just leave them standing around somewhere
  16. "Read this on the Frankfurt School http://www.politicallyincorrect.me.uk/ and then tell me it doesn't sound awfully familiar. " Well, I did read that. I also took a look at the references given on that site. Two were to other pages on the same website, and the third went to a page featuring a piece by Bill Lind, hardly an impartial commenter, and clearly wielding a political agenda. So I took a look at the Wiki entry for The Frankfurt School, having no textbooks to hand. I thought I'd look for the following; stuff that www.politicallyincorrect.me.uk appears to claim that the Frankfurt School invented: The Frankfurt school recommended (amongst other things): 1. the creation of racism offences 2. continual change to create confusion 3. the teaching of sex and homosexuality to children 4. the undermining of schools and teachers' authority 5. huge immigration to destroy national identity 6. the promotion of excessive drinking 7. emptying the churches 8. an unreliable legal system with bias against the victim of crime 9. dependency on the state or state benefits 10. control and dumbing down of media 11. encouraging the breakdown of the family ..and I couldn't find a single damned thing to confirm any of the above, and it's a big entry. I found a lot of the sort of near-impenetrable jargon you commonly find associated with philosophical institutions and their associates, particularly Marxist ones, but none so opaque that it would have been impossible to discover any of the above hidden behind the big words. So it looks as if the page you referenced is making it all up, or at least misunderstanding, selecting and distorting original source-material out of all recognition. I should probably say that I myself have no time for Marxism, or any other utopianism (libertarianism included), as some kind of ultimate solution to mankind's problems: but I've no time for obfuscation and dishonest analysis either, which the site you posted a link to offers in spades. As for the topic (finally!): you (@Jim_UK) really need to define "political correctness" as you yourself understand it, or how can we agree or disagree with you? It sounds as if you were unfairly attacked in the Guardian comment section, but why not post a link so we can judge for ourselves? For many people, "political correctness" means having some concern for the feelings of others; for example, not using descriptive words for other people that they've indicated that they find offensive. For others though, the term appears to be a blanket-phrase applied to just about everything they hate about the modern world, from hugely significant issues like human rights to annoyance that they can't feel free to use their favourite slang terms for ethnic minorities (a phrase that itself would more than likely be described sneeringly as PC by such people). Just my 2 cents (and some  )
  17. Skyrim is on its way, so it might be a good idea to hang on until the min. requirements for that are available. You will certainly get more bang for your buck if you build your own setup, given that you have the skill & confidence to do that obviously
  18. Click on item in inventory while holding left-shift.
  19. Don't overlook lighting. Dawn & dusk give good dramatic light/shade effects.
  20. 'Lily Savage' as that woman who runs the waterfront bar that likes sailors (non-Brits might not get this)
  21. "Tides - or lack of them." I asked about a tide mod ages ago in the mod suggestions forum. IIRC there are base-code reasons why this can't be done. Also, I guess it would look a bit odd in the accelerated time-scale the game uses, watching the water go up or down. I'd still like to see working tidal flow though, also in Fallout3.
  22. "It's illegal for a child to be shown dying even if it's fictional. I'm guessing the lack of ghoulified children is related to that." A bit late to this, but I don't know where in the world that would be illegal; poor taste maybe, but not illegal. Note that Deus Ex (along with other games) had various killable children in it..
  23. Might be worth considering the DVD reader as a possible source of corrupted files. The Fallout3 DVD is very demanding (I think it's double-layer) and can fail on ageing drives that still read other DVDs OK.
  24. I am so going to try that out
  25. Again, bad advice. a. You're treading on thin ice. b. Oblivion will refuse to be patched with a cracked version. Regarding (b), no it won't (see Ferryt's post; "I'm using my old no-CD hacked version of Oblivion.exe to play the game on my new computer."). I myself had to resort to a noCD patch after getting read problems with an ageing drive (since replaced). Obviously you do have to be very careful where you obtain this from, virus-check extensively, and backup the original exe.
