  1. ... it is undeniable that Steam is one of the best things to happen to PC gaming in years....

That is undeniably your opinion which is not shared by many. (See what I did there :teehee:)

They could really use it, and I'd be glad to use such an OS if only it had everything I needed that is provided on Windows.

Therein lies the problem and why Windows is so darn popular. :wallbash: (Your signature is funny btw  )

  2. That's some good points. I personally use several other security measures, even though its a gaming pc only.

Another thing that comes to mind is if Linux, or any other OS, does start getting popular, and I'm talking on par to Windows, we'll probably be seeing just as many hacks/exploits as Windows currently. One of the reaons why Windows is attack so much is because of how much more it is used over other OS.

  3. Regardless of Valve's agenda here, I personally think that this is a good thing for Linux since this might help push more hardware manufacturers, game makers and more independent coders to start adapting games and hardware for easier use in a Linux environment, instead of requiring some sort of Windows emulator.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, almost every version of Windows came with its own share of complications and restrictions on actual user control over their system and software under the guise of being "user friendly". The problem is that Microsoft hasn't ever really stepped back on these restrictions, but rather users have had to find ways to disable them, or deal with them. I would say that W7, as it comes fresh on a new install is about as far as you can get from perfect or even desirable for anyone who does anything more meaningful than surf the web or use facebook. To get it to a state where it is stable you have to disable most of the visual enhancements, toolbars, and other bits of useless RAM-hording flash in addition to disabling UAC, replacing the firewall with one that actually works, removing the tech support user account and blocking access, and a half dozen other things that I've forgotten. Just because W7 is the most stable version since Windows 98, does not mean it is particularly good. From what I've read of W8, even those aspects which are published and shown by Microsoft, I wouldn't want to use it either.

I've never had any issues with what you've listed here on W7, and I've been using it straight out the box with defaults on. I use that PC almost exclusively for my PC gaming.

In regards to Linux, and this is my ignorance, but what'll happen is just the same thing as what you stated, but in reverse. Users will have to have an emulator of some sort, either for Linux or for Windows. But again, that's just my ignorance. I know nothing of Linux other than that it is another OS.

  4. Of course Valve are scared; Microsoft have just released a new operating system with a game distribution system built in to it. They're going to throw all their toys out of the pram and make you think like Windows 8 is the end of the world as we know it because it directly competes with their model of doing business.

As far as I've read, however, Windows 8 hasn't turned out to be this all-fearful closed system where you can't install anything you want on it. From what I'm reading, you can install Steam on it just fine, and any other game you like from the disc or through Steam. The only place you can't install Steam or these games from is from Windows own App Store. OH NO! /sacrasm. Having said that I haven't installed Windows 8 and have no intention to because Windows 7 is perfect for me.

So really it seems what this boils down to is Valve spreading fear about Windows 8 because Microsoft might take a cut of Steams ludicrous 30% of profits from game makers. 30 freaking percent. How Valve are still considered the saviors of gaming is beyond me. I'm looking forward to some proper competition being made to Valve and Steam. I know it's on its way, I've turned down two separate meaningful invitations to join projects to help out in such an endeavour.

I seem to recall a panic of similarity when Vista came out.

The day Microsoft stops supporting games from its OS is the day they pull the trigger on themselves. They would be stupid to do that. I agree with Dark0ne here. Valve is just not wanting to cooperate with the competition, which is ironic because neither did Microsoft before their monopoly judgement from years back, which that is also understandable for both considering they are a business out to make money.

  5. The Old Republic was the first game I shelled out money on a collector's edition. Biggest disappointment ever. I hope the F2P gig fails even harder than the subscriber model to hopefully teach EA (another) lesson not to rush these kinds of AAA games.

Maybe LA will let Sony bring SWG back........ I doubt it.

  6. been playing diablo 2 since before LOD even came out! using proper old school mods for it too :D.....and i still play it to this day, ive had several level 99's and my dads had even more, surprisingly a big part of my childhood was spent sitting watching him slay legions of demons xD between us we've seen almost every unique in the game thats possible to drop lol, and collected them in an infinite shared stash between our characters (we use plugY, an absolutely essential mod for anyone who spends weeks or even months looking for every unique possible :) )

never played it online though, always single player ^^

I tried a mod once, but it ended up giving me a virus. :(

  7. It is possible to remove them, or any other spell for that matter. I personally use a mod that puts in a spell deleter.

However, there is a possible problem with removing one of those. I think it's Heal Minor Wound. The game will force you to default to that particular spell if there is ever a problem with a different spell you might be using such as a mod-added one or a custom spell you made. Think of that starter spell as a failsafe. If something goes wrong, the game switches to that starter spell, and if that starter spell isnt there....

  8. I've done all that except BOSS. What is that? I've been using Wrye Bash.

BOSS thread at the Bethsoft Forums. It's a very important utility that rearranges mods so that they will be more load order correct, which is important for game stability. It also has other information on your specific mods such as if they need to be cleaned or if there are known conflicts with other mods.

  9. Sure does. In fact, I was just thinking today that gaming companies need to go back to the basics and stop worrying so much about trying to get a piece of the billion-dollar gaming industry pie. Focus on the game, not the money. The money will come if the game is good.

However, I will give one example of an excellent game that didn't get enough hype. It comes from where my avatar came from: Okami. It was one of the best games I've ever played, even up to today, yet was considered a failure because it didn't sell enough and most certainly didn't get enough recognition.

  10. Hey, trying to find the name of the mod with real form-fitting mage robes that look like this:

I've searched tirelessly to find it again but to no avail. Halp!

    Is this it?

There's also a separate LightGuts version if you use that.

    Thank you! :D

    You're most welcome.

  11. good thing my password uses a combination of Upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols and is a reasonable size length. i always feel a little safer when i use this password. unfortunately, i use it (or some incarnation of it) for just about everything lol. O.o

With the exception of how the pw is made, change that practice of using the same one then Hoof, hackers are now onto stuff like that. If they get one password, they get all your game accounts.

About your World Event rewards missout, I think if you go to a waypoint and leave the area it doesn't count you as being there. I'd wait until after the event is over if someone happens to be around and rezzes you.

  12. I make it a common practice to manually download ALL my mods and organise them in separate folder. This way each uncompressed mod will have it's own folder containing each readme to refer back to and it saves a lot of headache, not just for keeping the readmes but to save any possible confusion with the mod files setup

Same here Ironman, but I'm also one of those "look under the hood" type mod users. :turned:

  13. I name my mod's readmes as Readme and have done so for as long as I've been modding, which is longer than my "join" date btw. I also do not know how the Nexus Mod Manager handles things nor use it myself, but I'm taking it that it simply dumps the file into your data folder, continents and all. I can see where that would lead to a problem.

NMM needs to be fixed to change that if you ask me. Like an automatic name change. This should be put on NMM's shoulders since this is a mod manager issue and not necessarily an issue with mods/modders.
