I thought I'd do this because i was curious. I'm partly a languages student so it would be nice to see if there were any others among us.

I've just realised that the poll may only allow one choice, in which case i suppose you should put the language that you use the most and are most fluent with which is not your mother tongue, and post the rest. I realise that English will be the predominant one here since we all converse in it, but I'm still curious.

I speak Spanish, by the way, if you can call having to retake your AS level exams in the subject understanding :cool2: .

So get voting. And perhaps, if you all vote, i can have my very first pinned thread  .

Okay, that goes over the line. What you said then is a direct contradiction in terms.

English is spoken by the English, and anyone else who learns the language. A bastardised version of English, lets call it American, is spoken by Americans. And yes, i'll agree that the main reason other people are learning English is because of the global influence of American and British industries, but that is not a reason to be ignorant of other languages and cultures.

But no more about it here. I want this poll to be like Daerk's one, just giving a bit more information about the members of the site.

By the way, i also said that you should only vote/post if you speak a language which is not your mother tongue. Naughty, naughty.

You do realize my post was a joking reference to the ignorant American stereotype, right?

Seriously, in theory I speak Spanish as well, but I've forgotten most of it. Languages are not at all my best subject, so I don't study them. It has nothing to do with respect for other cultures, I'd avoid english if I could get away with it!

I speak only Australian English fluently, but I can understand most spoken British and American dialects. I can read Hinglish, but I'm a little shaky on the spoken component.

I can also read and write Indonesian to a fairly high level, and speak it reasonably well.

Apart from that I've studied French and Italian in the past, but I doubt I could use either of them well enough to fool myself, let alone anyone else.

HTML, VB and PHP....  :laugh2:

Ah... you mean to say that you speak Geek. :P

As for me, I'm still fluent in German, though I can't claim to remember much of the Latin I learnt at school. As for French - my scant knowledge is mostly self-taught, and suffices for supermarkets and restaurants... just about. Dutch I can sort of understand a bit when it's written rather than spoken. In Spanish I can manage about 1 sentence, and my knowledge of Italian is restricted to being able to make a guess about the information on labels on the back of wine bottles....

Sorry Peregrine, its just that that subject touches a particular nerve and i thought you were serious. My bad :embarassed:

I always thought that learning Latin would be a good idea since you'd then be able to speak every Western and Southern European language to a basic degree, with changes of course.

I'm surprised that Indonesian is on here - can i ask how/why you learnt cactoblasta?
