Why are Thieves on the Road so Stupid?

Why? No matter how high my level gets, when I try to tell them to get lost, they always respond with "Nice try, but you don't scare me." Now I could understand that reaction back when I was level 5 or less -but I'm freaking level 50 now. I have speech near 100. I'm equipped with Daedric weapons and Ebony armor. Practically all of Skyrim knows I'm carrying out a one-man-war with the Thalmor and I've left a trail of dumber-than-rocks previous thieves beaten to within an inch of their life (literally) behind me.

You'd think word would eventually get around. But nooooo. Some pissant armed with a steel sword and a dagger thinks he can bully me into coughing up? I usually don't even bother with weapons. I just beat them to submission (bleed-out state) then get back on my horse and saunter away before they can get back up. When there are other travelers on the road nearby, I can almost imagine them snickering at the poor dumb thief.

At first (when my levels got into the twenties) it was comical. Then it got sad. Now it is plain irritating. I'm beginning to wonder if it is actually a bug in my game. Does anyone else experience this?

On a similar subject, I now estimate that I've killed eight assassins from the Dark Brotherhood. Is Astrid just that stupid? Does she really think that throwing assassins at me penny-packet-style will eventually work? I'm so disgusted with this stupidity that I'm going to take great delight in wiping out the Dark Brotherhood when I get the chance.

(Sigh. Yes, I was in rant mode. Thanks for reading.)

Hmm, thieves are simply poor, they need money so badly they'll risk their life, and word has gotten around, they know you have mountains full of gold and they go "Hmmpf the 20 other thieves couldn't take em! It's my time to shine!"

I kind of want to instead of killing them leave them to bleed out state and then once they regen beg me not to kill them and admit my awesomeness,no? Just me? Okay then.

The USKP considers it a bug. In fact they changed the threshold level down one notch so that it would be easier. Bad side effect. Now they get intimidated almost 100% of the time, if not 100%.

Wonder if that value can be adjusted in-game via script. Would be nice to have it switch from the higher to the lower after the player reaches specific skill set or level.

Unfortunately it can't be adjusted that way. The formula is locked up inside the engine somewhere and dropping their confidence value one notch was the only way to make it actually work.

Leaving it as it was meant that you'd have to console cheat yourself absurd amounts of speech + perks + enchanted items before it would actually function correctly - and in some cases even that wasn't enough.

It's all covered here: http://afkmods.iguanadons.net/index.php?/tracdown/issue/14876-intimidate-checkgetintimidatesuccess-function-always-fail/

Even in Morrowind, people recognised you by rep if you were a great hero or mass murderer and responded accordingly. Merchants would grovel, guards would try to kill you etc. Sure, it wasn't voiced and you had to read the speech text, but it was a little more realistic.

Shame they lost that feel and flavour.

Making games voiced - biggest mistake ever. Textboxes FTW!

And the Dark Brotherhood Assassins- yeesh. They come running up to you, swords drawn from halfway across the landscape.

Maybe Astrid is just trying to get rid of the recruits who skipped stealth training.

This is literally the best explanation I've heard so far.

Thanks guys! I honestly didn't expect a reply to what was essentially a rant.

So, it (sorta) IS a bug. Interesting.

That idea by IceDolphin would make a great mod. Would it be possible to hook into the game's "brawling" to set something up like that?

I had that happen to me last night, a khajiit, and i love the khajiit's, accosted me in the middle of the night.I would have liked to have set him on a different path, one that would have given him a new vision,a new life but, alas, instead i had to remove his head from his shoulders.A pity that...
