2nd playthrough and got bored halfway through

So I played the game while focusing on semi automatic rifles (completely OP as usual) and doing most side quests and finishing the game with the Railroad. Bad descision, I know. So then I started the game on the highest difficulty and focusing on automatic weapons and heavy weapons. Beginning was kind of challenging, but now I just yawn as I mow down enemies with my explosive bullet weapons. I did the story quest up until the BoS arrives and then I just found myself wandering around shooting stuff and having no incentive on joining any group. I build a settlement. Walk around some more, build some more stuff in a settlement. Do a small side quest. Buy some stuff. Build some more settlement stuff. And then I'm looking at the screen and I think to myself. There's really nothing I want out of this game at this point.

What's wrong here. When I played FO3 I could play this game 4 times in a row and not get bored. For Skyrim I created 20 characters and loved towing them around. In Boston there's just no interesting story to be found that I'd like to go through again. Is FO4 weaker in terms of content than the other Bethesda games?

I mean, I enjoyed the game, don't get me wrong. But in the end, what I enjoyed most was base building. That can't be right...

idk a lot of people have suggested the story as weak compared to FO3. I personally didn't like #3 as much as #4 but I still think new vegas was better than #4. DLC's can make a big difference as well as mods so I think its still to early to judge too harshly. When the GECK arrives this could be the best fallout ever

Are they going to add actually interesting story missions with characters that are worth remembering? I don't see mods changing that the world of Fallout 4 feels empty, your actions inconsequential and the NPC's forgettable. I don't really feel connected with the world. It's just... there. Walking from area to area so I can shoot stuff. There's no personality to anything in it. Even the groups you can join are stale. A bunch of mundane radiant missions with no progress. Fallout 3 had more interesting characters and areas that were different and had something going on. The Oasis, Little Lamplight, The Republic of Dave. It also had Fallout humor, something that was basically missing in this game. I think the coolest character in FO4 is Valentine, but he also feels like he doesn't belong there. A Private Detective in a town of 30 people and the rest of the area overrun by ghouls, super mutants and raiders? What's he investigating? Someone's cat went missing?

Is it too early to judge after having spent 150 hours in this game? I don't think so. The modding community isn't going to change the game. They are going to improve on what is already there. I've never seen a mod that changes a game completely to make it more immersive or have more personality. Sure you can change the weather, the way things look and add items, buildings and all sorts of stuff. Ultimately it's not going to change what you're doing or what you're experiencing in the game.

The story is a bit weak, and cliche in parts. I think they could have done so much more with it. I've been playing a female character, and I feel like she is rather uncharacteristically indifferent to what happened to her child. I know it's a game and not a movie drama, but I feel like there should have been... more. Character development to me seems pretty weak. A few examples: Cait is supposed to change after her personal quest, but I really found her no different. Her dialogue and attitude towards the PC is still pretty much the same as when I met her. You'd think Danse would change if he survives Blind Betrayal, and he does give some pretty good dialogue during the quest, but afterwards, he is exactly the same, and some of his random pro-Brotherhood dialogue even makes no sense given his current circumstance. Little things like that make the characters seem pretty flat. I agree there are a lot fewer interesting characters and side-stories in FO4 as well. I distinctly remember the side quests you mentioned in FO3 even though it's been 5-years since I played it. There haven't been any side quests in FO4 that are particularly memorable.

I enjoy FO4, but I think one playthrough and then saving before any points of no return so I can play each ending, will be enough. I can't imagine I'd feel the urge to do another complete playthrough.

I SO hear what the OP is saying. I played through FO3, FONV and Skyrim so many, many times each. Put FO4 away not that long after finishing the main quest and have no desire to go back. Never thought I'd do that with a Bethesda game.

And, from the looks of the upcoming 3 DLC's, Bethesda's more into crafting expansions than adding quests/adventures.

Now that I'm back to Skyrim, I'm remembering why I fell in love with Bethesda games. My quest log is absolutely overflowing with things to do and, in pursuit of one of those things, I'm currently winding my way through a crazy extensive Dwarvin ruin that I've already been in for over 2 hours (real time). And picking up journals along the way that tell an interesting story aside from the quest I'm on.

In FO4, my quest log rarely had more than a handful of things to do, most of which had me going to kill a few raiders in some bare bones 3-room location like flippin' Back Street Apparel.

For me, fallout 4 is the first of beth games, which i played through three times in a row (five in total), without a break.

After 4 months i played as many hours, as i played skyrim in all the years since release, and three times more than 3 or nv.

And after all that time, i still play, and i still find new things in every new playthrough.

Impressions can be so different

I've currently started a fifth run-through (officially only the second one as I quit around level 150 on 2 occasions and level 90 just now, without finishing the faction quests), despite the fact that I find the story completely ridiculous and the quests repetitive and unchallenging, except maybe early in the game when being sent to, for example, Corvega in order to get County Crossing or whatever to join the Minutemen...

What keepsme going is the building side of things. But, only because of a truck-load of mods which add a lot of craftables to the game. In vanilla, there's (in my opinion, of course) not enough there to warrant spending a lot of time on the game.

So far, I've accumulated around 2600 hours of gaming in FO4 and had 195 mods running until now. For the newest run, I toned down to 143 active mods, 114 plug-ins...

Fallout 4 is not as friendly to roleplaying as Skyrim, for example. Especially as your character is defined a lot in the beginning of the game, but to be fair, it was the same in Fallout 3. I feel like there's not as much incentive to start new games in Fallout 4, so it relies heavily on settlement building and side quests, the latter of which there aren't that many interesting ones. But settlement building can be fun too, or even repetitive grinding tasks... In Skyrim I had an alchemist character and spent most of then game just collecting stuff and making potions to sell, you can do the same with the crafting and the settlements in Fallout 4. I think DLC like Far Harbor are direly needed. I'm starting on a guest mod as soon as the CK comes out, but it's very time consuming to do quest mods and not many modders make them.

You'd think Danse would change if he survives Blind Betrayal, and he does give some pretty good dialogue during the quest, but afterwards, he is exactly the same.

He changes a little, his a bit more chill with his kind and won't downright dislike you if pick if they were leaning for them.

and some of his random pro-Brotherhood dialogue even makes no sense given his current circumstance.

That is part of his character.

but now I just yawn as I mow down enemies with my explosive bullet weapons.

Why are you using them then?

There's really nothing I want out of this game at this point.

Then play something else.

Not hating, but why bother looking at the game and wonder if you want to play to the point of making a thread instead of playing something else? I never get that.

I don't think so. The modding community isn't going to change the game. They are going to improve on what is already there. I've never seen a mod that changes a game completely to make it more immersive or have more personality. Dude what?

You can easily add more factions, more dynamic events, change the whole game, change the quests by adding lines, npcs and other quests, replace the main quest, overhaul pretty much everything. I can downright change all lines in the game, or simply add a new landmass and make the main stuff there. There is a mod that changes the werewolf guild by overhauling the whole faction, adding lines and options etc.

Yeah, this has been my only true complaint about the game. I still love it, and play it, but it is massively lacking in the quest department this time around sadly.

Yeah, I liked the few good quests and want more. Hope the upcoming dlcs add a ton of those.
