modding dying?

i think there are now more than enough really god mods avaliable so that the supply extends the demand.

There are still great mods released every day, but it feels like "more of the same"

This depends maybe also on the nearly unlimited possibilities which those great mods of the really talented modders show.

You want your own fully working synth lab, Submarine, Vault, Zeppelin... then get the mod and just do it.

I still get some requests and have some ideas in mind (although my modding abilities are rather limited), but i somehow lost the motivation to make them.

I started clearing up the raider camp around vault 88 and the spawn areas inside, replaced the red wooden door with a vault door, etc. as it really doesn't make any sense that there are still raiders living around as neighbors.

But i stopped, because i really got bored.

Not because fo4 is "a bad game" or "beth is evil" or something like that. It is more the question: do we need that, and will it really improve the game?

The only mods which are still missing are really good story mods. But as said, those will take some more time.

About story mods, the delays are caused by people having to learn how quests work technically in the game. Writing quests is not difficult, it is getting everything to work in the game.

To be honest I have noticed that things are really slow on the user and modder end. New released mods are getting very few endorsements or downloads for 'the newest Beth moddable game', even on X Box. In fact I would compare the interest in mods right now to that right now on Skyrim. Mods being released are generally small, tweaks and the like. There is a very definite decline in Fallout 4 interest whereas compared to Skyrim at this stage, mods were pulling in hundreds and even thousands of endorsements, even tiny mods. That said TES is always far more massive then fallout.

I do think that unfortunately the drama and publicity of it affected Fallout modding, users and modders alike. It left a very bad atmosphere and the Beth X Box forums that were bustling at the start have slowed to a crawl.

Personally I am looking forward to the Skyrim Remastered release and will be returning there when it is released. There should be a good deal of renewed interest thanks to the X Boxers joining. I wish it will be a return to the early days of Skyrim modding enthusiasm, but that is unlikely.

Compared to skyrim player numbers, fallout 4 is like a flash in a pan (in germany we call that "straw fire")

I think it is not only the difference in story or game design of fallout 4 and skyrim, but also the background and the mythology that makes Skyrim still interesting while fallout and the wasteland already got boring.

It is like: Mad Max and the Fallout Universe and all post apocalypse stories are really well developed, but not comparable to the whole Lord of the Rings stuff and the medieval and nordic sagas.

Lets not forget here people that fallouts modding scene was never as big as skyrim's or oblivion. More people prefer medieval fantasy to post apocalypitica which is fine as long as enough modders stay with fallout 4. The whole modding fiasco and massive delay in releasing the ck (seriously F U on that one bethesda) has certainly hurt the community but we may yet come back from it. I certainly hope so at least since my preferred genre is fallout not the elder scrolls. I think once the final DLC comes out and a few large mods are released things may yet liven up here again. As for skyrim remastered I wish any modder that will heading back to that game luck. I suspect fallout's modding problems will pale in comparison to skyrim's and that scares me.

@gunslinger

But are you still missing some items/weapons/things in fo4 except some decent new quests? What else can be done, what else is needed to complete the "experience"?

I could add dozens of new contraption machines to automatically build every single item in fallout, but there isn't even a real demand for the only standalone X-01 PA machine next to Manufacturing extended.

Or the PA paint jobs. The Captain America paint of niceguyhenry is a real masterpiece and even perfectly lore friendly. 1.200 DL in one month, seriously? The supply extends the demand, there are already more than enough other great paint jobs available

Statistically, Fallout modding has never been as popular as Elder Scrolls modding. If you compare Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas numbers to Skyrim then the numbers aren't even in the same ball park. The Fallout series seemingly doesn't have the same long term appeal that the Elder Scrolls series does. Oblivion, released in 2006 sits comfortably between Fallout 3 (released 2008) and Fallout New Vegas (released 2010) in our stats. That should tell you everything you need to know.

If you'd like to actually use some statistical data to come up with some conclusions then here are the relevant pages:

Oblivion stats

Skyrim stats

Fallout 3 stats

Fallout New Vegas stats

Fallout 4 stats

Most of the games start with a very high amount of new files/downloads. This is completely normal; a single-player game is always played the most in its first month. It also makes logical sense that the most mods will be generated in those first few months as well; mainly because the very quick, "simple", small and "easy" mods are all released in those first few months. After that, modding slows down. This is a natural slow down as a result of the fact most of the small and simple mods that were wanted/needed were churned out in those first few months. As a result, mod releases slow down, to be replaced with the more content-rich mods that take more time. Bigger mods, but less of them. Logical, no?

If you compare Skyrim stats with Fallout 4's, you'll see Skyrim modding was always most popular straight from the start.

You'll also notice that during the late spring and summer months, there's normally a small sharp rise in one month, followed by a decrease in downloads in the others, followed by a rise towards Autumn and Winter again. The sharp rise can be attributed to the Steam Summer Sale. The decline in downloads during summer can be attributed to people going on holiday and getting out more due to the weather improving.

My conclusion would be that the current stats of Fallout 4 modding is natural when compared to Bethesda's other main games, and indeed when taking in to account the Elder Scrolls is a more popular modding franchise than the Fallout series. We can also conclude that it's way too soon to be able to accurately say that the game is dying.

My experience with making these posts -- where I bring actual facts and conclusions based on said facts in to things -- is that my comments go largely ignored because people came here to vent and come up with wild speculation to support the agenda they had when first posting here. Lets see if that trend continues.

Thank you for providing links to the hard data. Judging from charts they seem to support what I and Dark0ne were saying. Fallout has never been as popular as Elder Scrolls, that said it looks like fallout 4 is holding it's own. I think we'll have a much better idea of where fallout stands come December. Until then we have to wait and besides some big mods are coming up. In septmember we have Frost releasing at the end of this month Trainwiz should release maxwells world and hopefully we'll get some good weapon mods released.

Maybe because all are all talking about the same figures and one call it "dying" and the others call it "usual decline for a fallout game". It is like the PC market, declared dead years ago but still alive. But also lot of PC retail chains are already gone.
