leonardo2
from what I've heard (as I've never personally played Morrowind) , it has the best story of all Elder Scrolls games , and some of the best questsunfortunately , it has some of the worst mechanics (combat is really random and such , as far as I know)I have played Oblivion extensively , and I absolutely adore that game . the combat is quite like Skyrim (except for magic which is somewhat different)That's true about the flaws in Morrowind, but on the other hand those flaws is what makes Morrowind the best moddable TES game ever. And Morrowind has depth in-game and the best MQ, but the MQ in Skyrim isn't bad either. The only thing that's random is blocking with the shield, other than that it is pretty much the same as it is in Morrowind except for casting spells. In Morrowind one need to use both hands to cast a spell in vanilla, but with mods the player can cast spells like you do in Oblivion. No, the combat in Oblivion are not the same as it is in Skyrim in fact the combat in Oblivion and Morrowind are basically the same aside for the shield blocking and of course spellcasting, because one cannot use dual weapons in Oblivion and every time one wants to heal in a fight in Skyrim the player first need to either unequip the right hand or the left hand to cast a healing spell or use a healing potion. But there are mods that makes fighting in Skyrim similar to what combat is in Oblivion. correct me if I'm wrong (as I said , I haven't actually played Morrowind , so this is based on videos I've seen of it) , but in Morrowind aren't the combat mechanics random , in the fact that you can spam the attack button on an enemy and it will determine whether or not you hit based on your skill , as opposed to your spacing?in Oblivion and Skyrim , when you swing your weapon at a target , if they are in range you will always hit them . I've heard that it's not the case in Morrowind (and the videos I've seen also show this) now I know that Skyrim and Oblivion have different combat in that each games gives different options (in how perks work , dual wielding , the different magic systems etc)but what I meant is that in my experience , combat in these games doesn't have a different depth . you still only have two button , LMB attacks (and a long press is a power attack) , RMB is a block (or using the left hand in the case of Skyrim , where you can wield anything in your hand) , and it's all about trying to stagger or out maneuver your opponent . this doesn't make them identical , but I think combat in these games hasn't really evolved all too well (just compare footage of Vanilla Skyrim , Skyrim VR and the footage of TES Blades from E3 , they all seem to have a very similar melee combat system , and the last of these is also a mobile game...... that doesn't say much about depth and complexity , does it?) as for spell casting , while Skyrim has the best mechanics for a pure spell caster (with the ability to wield and cast two spells at the same time) , the system in Oblivion seems to consider magic as a support tool (it doesn't take a hand slot , so you might as well equip a weapon in your hands and use it) . however , it has a better spell system than Skyrim (in my opinion) due to spellmaking (which I believe Morrowind also has)didn't know about magic in Morrowind using two hands , but I haven't seen much about magic in that game (aside from exploits using the flight scrolls and such silliness) these should cover what I meant , just in much more detailsbut again , this is just my opinion , and I'm fully aware I'm not well informed about vanilla Morrowind at all , so I'm sorry if I spread misinformation without realizingMore information about combat in Morrowind can be found on UESP. The combat in Skyrim actually have some depth, because like you said about perks the player can improve either weapons or spell casting by picking the right perks when level up. Neither Morrowind and Oblivion has perks and both games requires to sleep before level up, unless one are using the Oblivion XP mod. Yep, both Morrowind and Oblivion pretty much have the same spell making with one important difference and that's the player in Morrowind only have to talk to a NPC to create a spell or two while in Oblivion one must go to the Arcane University (must be a member in the Mage's Guild) or buy a spell(s) from one of the vendors across Cyrodiil. HeyYou
I liked Morrowind a LOT better than Oblivion, while in vanilla (no mods) form. There are a LOT of mods out there in the world to deal with most of the issues in Morrowind, and the exploration aspect is much better as well. (I don't think MW has any variety of fast travel either.) I like leveling in morrowind better than the later games. its supposed to be a role playing game, where character skill determines success/failure. Oblivion is still pretty good in that aspect, but, later games..... not so much. Combat is skill based. If you are lousy with a short blade, don't expect to hit a lot with one. As your skill improves, your odds of actually doing some damage improves as well. In Oblivion, you will almost always hit your target (with a melee weapon) but, DAMAGE is based on skill...... So, at low levels, you do very little damage, even with a two-handed sword. Also, leveled enemies..... Its a lot less obvious in Morrowind, in oblivion, beth went WAY overboard with it. I played vanilla for about 45 minutes, and came to the conclusion that leveling was actually a BAD idea....... and quit playing. Then FCOM came out..... and it RADICALLY changed the in-game experience. Of course, getting all the components installed, and working properly is an exercise....... but, makes the game MUCH more challenging. And fun. SerchBoogie
Hi. I was about to post a new topic but I have a similar question. With the announcement of TES IV I felt the need to play a The Elder Scrolls game again. Skyrim was my first TES ever and the only one I've played, but as much as I love that game I think I've played it enough. But I want more TES, I don't know if I should buy TES Online or buy TES IV Oblivion for 4 dollars on steam now. 1.- A few years back I was in the same situation as I am now. So I got a copy of Oblivion with my super legal and authorized distribuitor, just to try the game, and OMG, It was like hitting a wall at full speed, the graphics, the voice acting, the character models, controls, the overall feeling, the clunkyness, it really hurt. 2.- As for TESO, most people say that if you're looking for a true TES experience, TESO is not the way to go. I'm considering Oblivion again because you can mod it so it can be and acceptable experience in 2018. I want to play an Elder Scrolls game now :pinch:

I want to play an Elder Scrolls game now :pinch: if you want to experience an Elder Scrolls game , ESO is as far from it as you can goit's an MMO with an ES paintjob , but it doesn't behave like an ES gameto me , an ES game is about the freedom of exploration , the quests , making your own character and finding your way in the worldthat game doesn't really have that . quests are as basic as any MMO (expect the level or radiant quests , nothing beyond that . which is a big reason why I would also stay away from FO76 , but that's a different subject)combat is shallow , rewards are terrible , the game is grindy as all hell (or at least that was the game on release , or so the reviews said , I never touched it)it may contain the world of ES , but it doesn't have the soul of the game Oblivion isn't really that clunckyin fact , I would say it controls pretty similar to Skyrim . sure Skyrim has made a few advancements over it , but there are still things that game does so much better it's scary (do yourself a favor , play all the Daedric quests , as well as the thieves guild and the dark brotherhood . you can thank me later ;) )and with mods , you can do quite a lot with that gamewholeheartedly recommend getting it , it's well worth the few bucks
3aq
Morrowind all the way. Combat is different, as it require more logic and thinking involved.. success rate in combat is tied to ones stamina. Likewise with casting magic its tied to ones wisdom. Though it's rather aged graphically, once you get accustomed to its dated graphics and DnD styled combat, the game becomes very fulfilling to play. But your miles may vary, as I seem to be wearing rose tinted glasses, ie you should take my opinion with a pinch of a salt.
HadToRegister
I prefer Morrowind, and if you take your time and mod the hell out of it, you'll be hard pressed to think that the game is 15 years old.I'm running it without any crshes (believe it or not), thanks to WryeMash. It takes a bit to get it modded right because some mods are only found on the old modding websites, and some obviously have been abandoned a very long time ago, but with enough effort it can be rewarding and funAlso, Combat is not "Random" it's based on your skill, ex: if you have 1 skill in Hand-to-Hand, then you have a 1% chance to HIT, and a 99% chance to missIf you have 50 skill in Short Blades, then you have a 50/50 chance to hit/miss etc.You can EASILY get these skills up before leaving Seyda Neen.I spent my early days in Seyda Neen punching Mudcrabs to death, by the time I got to Balmora and the Assassins kept coming after me every time I slept, I got my Hand-to-hand skill up to 100% and can now punch Dremora to death, while still fizzling on basic Fireball spells. Here's some screenshots I took just of the Water and Coast where you start in Seyda Neen. For me, Morrowind was the Creepiest Elder Scrolls because it has such Dark Atmosphere about it.Screenshot 1Screenshot 2Screenshot 3Screenshot 4Screenshot
JimboUK
Morrowind really needed a better way of showing the player that they'd missed, the sword or whatever just passing through your opponent was fine if you understood what was going but to those who didn't it looked really bad.
