Simply can't even install this! Help needed urgently.

Hi.

I recently realised that my Steam and SSE directories were not where they should be... i.e. they were in ProgramFiles(x86), not on a separate drive. (I downloaded steam way before I even knew about mods, let alone tried to make them.

I thought to put this right, transferred steam, SSEedit, CK and all my SSE data files to another drive. Apart from an hour or so doing it, backing up etc, this was no problem.

I then got SSE edit, CK etc running again with the right shortcuts and came to NMM... the least of my prior worries, or so I thought. Since Vortex seemed the way to go, I deleted NMM and attempted to download Vortex...

I get to the download page, try it (both ways, the recommended and custom) and... nothing works. I can try to open the file or save or save_as... nothing. Double clicking any download results in the dreaded 'Windows cannot open this file: choose which program you would like to open it with' message. I certainly get no installer dialogue, as is supposed to happen.

jeez, but I've re-written half of my PC with no problems except where it comes to this...

Anyone know why nexus isn't playing ball with me? I really can't see why attempting to download Vortex from the official page won't work... but it doesn't!

P.S. the reason I said this was urgent is that I don't like to test mods unless I'm on a profile that excludes all other .esp files. I have a current project that is looking really good for release on Nexus, so I'd like to be able to game-test it thoroughly. I won't do this unless I'm sure about the save.

Thanks for the replies.

Still no joy after disabling my anti virus and windows firewall. I've not had an issue downloading mods from Nexus, so I'm at a loss. I can download the file and unzip it, then the exe is zipped inside that. I've made sure Nexus is in my safe zone for my browser and that's set to low priority.

I'll keep trying things but this is so frustrating.

Edit: Had to unzip the file manually, then unzip the .exe and placed it into the same directory. I still can't figure out why I couldn't do it any other way but Vortex is at least working now.

Where did you download Vortex that was in a zip file?

Hadtoregister,

From the nexus official page.

I just followed the instructions, clicked the one-click install button option and clicked save as to save it to my drive with steam on it. ( in fact I tried both buttons but the result was the same).

I say it was zipped, that's maybe not accurate. the file that I got had a strange name and windows couldn't open it. I opened it with bitser and it transferred the contents to the place I set. I'm certain that the exe file I could then see was zipped. I couldn't see this before only one file sized at around 80 MB, if I remember correctly.

I've just downloaded it again with the same result. This is the file name: Vortex-1-0-17-7-1551958119. Double-clicking this file results in Windows declaring that it can't be opened, as I said before.

I should maybe add that after doing this I reinstalled mods from nexus using vortex with no problem, so I've no general issues over downloading from nexus... this is the first time I've had an issue, actually. (I uninstalled everything to get a nice clean installation with vortex... half of my mods needed updating anyway, so I thought it for the best)

OH I understand now, it wasn't zipped, either your browser or antivirus program renamed it.

Instead of downloading Vortex.exe your browser or antivirus renamed it to something like Vortex.exe.3rt

It's to protect your computer from auto running any exe you download, but it causes confusion amongst people who don't know it's happening

The file you download from Vortex is an executable, it has to be installed by running it as an executable.

If you're extracting it as an exe it may appear to work but you're going to run into trouble later.

As HadToRegister says: If your AV, browser (or browser extension) rename it to anything other then .exe, rename it to that.

Then get a AV/Browser that isn't crap.
