NMM, Vortex crossover

IronFistDragon

Recommended Posts

when i load up NMM it shows the plugin list i had going last time i used vortex. when i change anything in NMM those changes carry over to vortex. why aren't they separate programs? i would like to play old saves, and non LOOT compatible stuff with NMM, but if there always changing one another it defeats the purpose of having multiple programs. i have two pieces of software, but only one option. what am i missing about how this software works?

IronFistDragon - This is a very interesting scenario. The simple answer is that having two (or more) separate lists of data would be bad software engineering because the game wouldn't know which one to 'listen' to. Imagine that you worked for two people and they could both tell you what to do for each hour of the day without consulting each other or you... However, if there is a single piece of paper that your two bosses write on and you can then read that then you'd know what to do. Whether you use NMM or Vortex is up to you - as you've got both installed you're in a unique position to compare them!

Both tools have to synchronize with the plugins.txt file that the game itself uses. That file is the "single source of truth" regarding load order.

With NMM and Vortex this may seem odd but consider you were using NMM with LOOT or Vortex with LOOT: Of course you would expect the mod manager to pick up the changes made by the external tool and not just reset them.

Inside Vortex you can disable autosort and then Vortex will not touch load order any more, leaving whatever you did in foreign tools alone.

Are you sure?

On my machine, the plugin order in the plugins.txt file does not match with the order in Vortex on several positions. Also, there (in the file) remain the records about plugins of the two last installed mods that I have already uninstalled.

Edit: Evidently, it's related to the Linux specifics. Just found multiple instances of the plugins.txt and am studying the difference!

Edit2: Yep, really, after the right linking between the multiple files the order is synchronized. I created this mess myself by (a) installing Vortex and Steam in different Wine prefixes and (b) editing the game's file instance in a code editor configured for LF line end instead of CR-LF  Anyway, thanks for info!

Edit3: Found in the folder $HOME/Local Settings/Application Data/Skyrim Special Edition, where resides one of the Vortex's plugins.txt, also the file loadorder.txt. Is it intended to be there normally (on Windows)? It has the first line '# Automatically generated by Vortex' and differs from plugins.txt in having 5 master files (Skyrim->Dragonborn) before the first mod (from Creation Club). Also, it does not have asterisk in the beginning of each line.

zixi, i had a job with bosses like that.

thnx for the feedback everyone. problem is i modded my self into a corner. old games don't always load right with vortex. i guess im just gonna have to get on with some new games

Old games don't always load right with other mod managers either.

The problem is with old games, is the mods were being zipped up with no standards yet.

Some were being zipped up to work with Wrye Bash, some to work with something like OBMM or FOMM, but others were meant just to be manually installed.

It's not until you get to Skyrim where you'll find the mods all zipped up with the same structure.

Ah, sorry, I was being imprecise, it depends on the game and the mod manager.

The older games (like Oblivion, Fallout 3) didn't store the load order in plugins.txt but instead used the file date for the order and mod managers would have to update the file time to get things to load in the correct order.

Then another game (was it Skyrim? I'd have to check) stored the order in plugins.txt but you couldn't list disabled plugins there (anything in the file was enabled) to mod tool devs introduced the loadorder.txt to communicate between them the entire load order including files that are otherwise disabled (or hard coded).

With SSE and Fallout 4 we can store disabled plugins in plugins.txt but Vortex at least still generates the loadorder.txt to be safe.

So yes, plugins.txt isn't necessarily the single source of truth, depending on the file times it's a combination of plugins.txt, loadorder.txt and file times. But still, all modding tools act upon the same files and so a change you make in one is reflected in all tools.

I'm glad the bosses are in the past!

I'm sorry we couldn't deliver better news for you!

Anyway, I'd be interested in seeing whether you stick with NMM or Vortex.
