kradus
Yeah, it's clear that it doesn't take an npc being mad at you for the assassins to come, but the dragonborn does kill a lot of people in his quests(escaping helgen for one), it could simply be one or more grieving relatives seeking revenge. marianojoey
Never started the Thieves Guild arc (most of my characters don't even go INTO Riften unless I decided to start the Dark Brotherhood quest), so this Blackbriar fella can't be calling the shots on me. Also, I usually don't piss off the Thalmor (I hate them and all, except for that one Altmer char I made once), unless I'm 100% sure I can take them down (and since I play low level, I usually can't). I never start the Dragonborn quest, until I visited all the cities and villages in the map, so no "shouts on the street" for me, the Companions only appeal to a couple of my characters, so the Silverhand could be doing it, but not at all my chars, and finally, I think both sides of the stupid civil war should be dead (in fact, when I finally become really high level, I'll see the way to finish them all off), and never join either... and the assassins keep appearing. My guess is this: The guy (changes from time to time) that hires the three thugs, after seing they got murdered or simply failed (you can outrun them if you see them comming at you, fast travel is a nice option if they didn't talk to you), decides you are to much of a problem for the good people of Skyrim and decides to send "profesionals", or the "out for a walk" bandit. :)
Georgiegril
I'm almost positive that the generic assassin that attacks you with the anonymous writ is sent by Mavin Black-Briar. It's well-known that she has eyes and ears everywhere in Skyrim and beyond, plus she has great influence with both the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. There's also some circumstantial evidence if you break into Black-Briar Manor in Riften and take a look around. I'm seconding digital trucker. There is (IMO) more than just circumstantial evidence that it's maven, if you break into her house. Its there even though I have not joined the Theives guild either this playthough. Maven has cronies in Whiterun and elsewhere, and she may be willing to have you offed just so the balance of power is not upset, since she had all of Skyrim wrapped around her finger before you showed up. Brandy1123
Recall the currier with his little notes of intrigue? They state that not everyone will be happy to see you, as the dragonborn, flap your dragon gums, spewing out dragon breath (without even a breath mint afterwords  ) Just imagine, its some of "those" people or factions that take the DB into their employment. If some small child can evoke the power, then even a simple famer or some astute Royalty might likewise favor that cloak and dagger approach to elliminate you. EDIT : This was just psoted to the mods... http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/29655 It gives you the name of a person who contracted the hit. Revenge!!!.. I mean if you dig that sort of thing...and so forth
LordSarcasm
I do know of two quests in particular that may trigger an assassin encounter, both of them are part of the Civil War questline and involve blackmail.
Dubnoman
Lol, the thread title can be read as a rhetorical question. "Who calls the Dark Brotherhood on the Dragonborn? What kind of fool does that?!"

Papajack55
It's Maven because she's always saying how she has "connections with the Thieves Guild, and if that don't work out then she'll call in the Dark Brotherhood." What she doesn't know is that you have become the Listener, and I have found this out one time the easy way. I pissed her off big time and told her off and walked away like she was nothing in the Skyrim way. I waited for a week and nothing happened so I broke into her estate in the BlackBriars Lodge outside of Riften and snuck my way all around down to the room that was closed. I caught her there performing the Black Sacrament. She had no way of knowing that Astrid was dead because no one would tell her. When she left, I went in and she was still writing notes to Astrid and they were in a pile to the left of the circle. I have a good invisibility spell that keeps me invisible for as long as I want even if I fight. Then there are always a few guards in Riften after that telling me, "Psst, I know who you are. Hail Sithis.", in a whispering tone.
Gamelan
Just a point here - not everyone you pass knows you're Dragonborn. Even deep into the MQ you get "Maybe I'm the Dragonborn and I just don't know it!" from the guards constantly. Who would say that... to the Dragonborn? Point is, I'm pretty sure to most of Skyrim you're just some douche with a price on your head.
fraquar
My guess is it's the gate guard at Whiterun. He has to let you in no matter how much he wants to keep you out.
