Blog piece: Ads, Supporters, Endorsements and Bandwidth Throttling

I'm sorry, but just not feeling the new endorsement idea. Unless I'm a complete idiot - the reason for the low download to endorsement ratio is because of UPDATES to mods. Each time you update your mod, a new download number is tacked on to the total (is it not ?). What SHOULD be done for the endorsement system is allowing users to add additional endorsements per version. So if they loved the v1, endorsed it, came back a few weeks later and noticed a v2 and liked it even more than before than can tack on another endorsement. Can't tell you how many comments I've read that say something like "Love the update so much, wish I could endorse this mod twice !". How hard would it be, really, to implement endorsement per mod version ?

Not sure you're getting the point. We're comparing the endorsement to unique download ratio, not endorsement to total download ratio.

Just to clarify: If we purchase the supporting member rank for $1.00 permanently AND use the endorsement system we will be getting 1.5MB/sec correct?

That's correct. Except it's £1, not $1. And the system isn't in place yet, but it will be.

You're one smart cookie. Always have been. Now is, of course, no exception. The ideas presented here are simply brilliant and keeps everything mostly fair and not punishing anyone in a definite manner. So, if I decide to use an adblocker as well as turn off the site skins (though the adblocker would do that anyway), I could still use the endorsement system and get the 1 MB/sec download speed that is the default.

Fortunately for you, this post of yours FINALLY reminded me that, OH WAIT, I have AdBlocker on for the nexus sites! So I've turned it off. And, uh, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to turn it back on, but I'll endure... for yooouuuu (but mostly for the mods. :P).

Looking forward to some of the other (hopefully positive) changes you have up your sleeve. :)

After getting more heavily into using mods, I've come to use an obscene amount of time on this page, so I thought it only fitting that I should help support it; I've just paid for a lifetime premium subscription. Keep up the good work.

Wow, my eyes hurt from reading that... lol ... good points as always and lots to think about.. I'm liking this open manner you are starting here...(flicking a switch) adblock off :)

While I am already a supporter and would be given an ad-free experience, I do not mind ads at all. Consider creating an opt-out feature for people like me that are willing to support the Nexus just a little more, with no loss (in my opinion) of browsing quality.

Just disabled the adblocker for this site (and a few others I frequent). At some point I'm sure I'll be going for a Lifetime subscription. And at least one other person said it already but I'll echo it...even if I go Premium I wouldn't mind the ads if it means further support for you guys. So an option to turn on ads even if I'm a Premium member would be swell. Edited by Raylon

I undertand what you said and I think I'm going to become premium not because it blocks ads (cause I find some ads pretty funny like the ones when you have to shoot an iphone), or for the download speed or even for all of the reasons that it will unlock expect the complete download history cause I endorse pretty much all of the mods I download cause It's my way to thanks the modders and the complete history will permit me to see which mod I didn't endorse but the primary reason why I'll become a premium member is to support the nexus cause I can't see on which site I'll being downloading mods if the nexus didn't exist cause I don't really like the workshop and the nexus community is cool and I have a lot of respect for the modders and a lot of respect to all of the maintenance team cause you're doing an amazing job for keeping up the nexus and I'm very thankfull to you the only support I'm giving is not big so for supporting you more this is why I'm going to be premium cause I understand what you mean and I agree with it so I expect you to see my comment and thank you for everything.

Sorry for the english I'm french.

Dark0ne,

I love the way you're going with this. The way you've broken down the tiers and with the reward system makes perfect sense.

What I would love to see though, is some kind of rating system for mods. i.e. I downloaded a mod, checked it out, don't feel I can endorse it at all. Why? Because it's so full of bugs and broken code that I can't possibly recommend it to anyone. Now, I can leave a message in regards to this in the comments. Unfortunately, the comments section on some mods gets huge, and even I don't typically go reading through much more than the first page of the most recent posts. I'm sure many people don't even bother to click on the discussion tab.

The endorsement system is good for ranking mods, but we need a rating system. 1-10, or the 5-star method.

For me, Giving a mod an endorsement is pretty much the same as giving it a 5-star rating. If I absolutely love it, it will get endorsed. If I like it ok, it remains on my system but doesn't get endorsed. If it really sucks, I'll remove it from my system and will try to throw a post in the discussion for that mod. (So far this has only happened once, and for some reason I was unable to leave a post in the discussion.)
