I've gotten the error saying that i'm running version 0.0.0.0 and its not loading properly, i've tried starting fresh with new directory and just installing skyUI and SKSE but nothing works. not sure where to go with it now. my directory might need to be wiped and reinstalled clean again but I really have no idea what i am doing... Any help regarding this would be appreciated.

P.S. I had it working for just a little bit but MCM doesn't show up anymore and when it finally does show up there's an unknown text character right infront of it ($?)

To ensure you have SKSE running, at the Bethesda menu screen in-game, type the tilde key (~) and then: getSKSEversion

If it is running, it will tell you the version of SKSE.

Assuming SKSE is running, to get rid of the $ symbol you may need to tell Steam to revalidate the game files.

Install SKSE first of all. Of course, make sure its the correct version. There is many guides on how to do it correctly without error, even in 2020. Also make sure you load the game using the SKSE loader. It will be in your directory as "skse64_loader.exe". You can make a desktop shortcut for this. But anyway. Once youre ingame (main menu), hit the tilde key (Its most likely beneath Esc. If not, look up where it is based on your keyboard, UK/USA etc) and type "getskseversion" without the quotation marks, hit enter and it should give you the latest version. If it does, its working and you can play the game as normal. If it doesnt, it hasnt installed correctly or youve misplaced it.

Are you using Vortex to install mods? Im pretty sure you can install SKSE with Vortex just by dragging and dropping the zip file into Vortex, it should install it for you. Id strongly recommend downloading any mods with Vortex or any other mod manager. If you dont use Vortex, its Nexus's mod manager, and you can install it from their website.

I would uninstall Skyrim SE from Steam, then head to your directory and delete anything left over. SKSE, SkyUI, etc. Follow a recent guide on installing SKSE if you havent already, then follow some of the instructions I provided above, if the video doesnt already provide the same instructions.

Hope youre able to fix this.

Thank you all for the advise, i'll keep trying the votex way, its gone the furthest so far. I have tried both ways, although manually installing into the directory is really confusing due to not being able to see the same files for some reason. I'll work on the fresh install directory and later today ill be able to come back to this.

I stumbled across on youtube video showing how vortex can install the skse. I'm not able to find the video or the mod page now =( I tried the manual install method again but to no avail. is this supposed to be a more complicated computer process? or somewhat simple?

It tells me invalid command of some sort, so its not installed properly. the renaming and coping has me a bit confused. theres a skse-readme and some other things im not sure where those go

If you do the drag and drop method of installing SKSE in Vortex, you may need to go to the dashboard and tell Vortex where SKSE is installed by right-clicking on the SKSE buttton on the Dashboard of Vortex, selecting Edit and then pointing the target at the SKSE loader exe in the Skyrim directory.

At least that's what I had to do when I last installed SKSE64.

Then, of course, boot Skyrim from that, not from the default Skyrim exe.
