Now what?

edit: found my recovery codes eventually. What a dumb system. What's wrong with sending a text to my phone like every other site?

My difficulty was because I am on a pc and using the web version, not the mobile version. But in all seriousness, if I couldn't find my recovery codes and thus couldn't get into the site, how would I access it?

seems if you don't have them you're SOL.

Kinda/sorta a big-ass hole in the account preservation/recovery processes to me. imagine if that was your bank? lost you codes? open a new account, we'll keep all the money in your old one.........

2FA is great for security (or at least, better than not having it) but yeah, I agree. It puts a huge burden on the user to make sure their own records are safeguarded and backed up as much as possible. Granted, we all should ideally be doing that anyway, but it's still a huge pain in the butt and can be very burdensome for folks.

Yes. But the first I had to encounter it. It puts a huge unnecessary burden on the user.

How can I secure my account in the meantime?
Until the WebAuthn feature is released, you will still be able to recover your account if you lose access to your Two Factor Authentication by:
  • Using one of your 2FA backup codes at the login screen*.
  • Contacting [email protected] from the email linked with your account and providing an invoice from PayPal or a bank statement showing a Premium membership payment.

Can Authy Desktop be used for 2FA on Nexus? If so, how? I've tried to add a Nexus account to Authy Desktop but have never been able to do so. However, I have some recovery codes that I received from Nexus in Nov 2019. Are those still good? Am I supposed to use those with Authy Desktop?

I'm very confused.

Don't know about Authy Desktop but those codes were how I was able to get back in. It's amazing that I still had them, actually.

my own solution is lastpass. i have the recovery codes for several places stored in lastpass, lastpass itself is protected by 2fa and so on and so on and so on. lastpass works cross-platform so laptop/desktop/phone/tablet.

however, if i lost the recovery codes for any reason - im hosed.

i *think* thats really a gap that needs to be filled. The question, as ever, is how? there are methods, but ultimately there's a cost involved. implementation, support, education and so on.

i think it would have been a dreadful shame if you'd lost your access to the website. i have seen you offer thoughtful, helpful, insightful comment in many forums and to lose someone like that would be a terriffic blow.
