I've noticed that some of these infractions come in waves of similar types of activity: for example, right now it's mean-spirited people uploading or linking to viruses. What do these horrible humans hope to gain from doing this?

I'm guessing it's some group that got into a bunch of old unused accounts and is spamming the same malicious links.

New accounts, mix of bots and user behaviours, spamming in the hopes of the pages being around long enough to get search indexed so people searching for something on the site might get served their spam page.

Spammers riding our coattails in the hopes of getting more widespread opportunities.
