duma24
Silly question: how do I block recaptcha? I use ublock and whitelist the nexus, but adding a custom rule would require removing the whitelist. As for privacy badger I don't like the idea of having to add another complex addon just to block google... other ideas?
waspdeath
For me I guess I was just doing them wrong???? It used to be you clicked the picture, it got checked and stayed, you clicked a few of them, then hit verify. But recently I was getting the car one over and over, pictures disappearing over and over. Then I discover now instead of checking the boxes, you make them disappear, then when the fields no longer have said pictures, you can now verify, like a process of elimination or something (was never aware of the change, just kept getting locked out before i could figure it out.) So we're doing riddles and ninja changes to the captcha now. How needlessly enraging... I can't wait until the internet is nothing but digital checkpoints and roadblocks/adverts you can't skip every 30 seconds everywhere you go. P.S. I still get locked out of them even knowing how to do them. Wow! Now that's good technology. Edited July 12, 2018 by waspdeath
Jyotai
Since when did this become a thing? Not only i cannot longer dl mods without logging in - which doesn't bother me too much since it's for the greater good of donation points - but a captcha on login? really? what's the rationale behind the nexus implementing this?tbh, for me, having to go through this process is so repulsing that i indeed concidered not to login and not to download the mod i was after. Without a Captcha on login, the site would basically become a spot for hundreds of thousands of Russian bots per hour to register accounts and spam the forums with "buy boots on amaxxxon dot ru" ads, complete with pictures of 20-something year old European women for profiles and "date women in your area who happen to look EXACTLY like this Russian model" posts... - But most of those ads are actually filled with keywords used by companies in their google ads. The real goal is to get eyeballs on those words and drive up or down the value of different terms in google analytics / adwords... Used to manage a forum and a google ads campaign, so I saw the bots, and recognized the value of the structure of the spam, realizing they didn't even need me to click their links to get value for their clients... and installed captcha software... As to the system here... I do notice that it often gets backgrounded by my popup blocker and I have to refresh it... But I'm all for a little hassle if it avoids those bots. You don't want to see what a forum looks like after it gets over 10,000 new accounts in one day all of whom make a few hundred posts each - often responding to very old threads to do so, and mixing it with posts that have words pulled from past posts to make it look legit to any auto-mated removal system...- You REALLY DON"T want to be the poor webmaster schmuck that has to clean that up either... :P Edited July 12, 2018 by Jyotai

HadToRegister
~ so you mean.. beth net? A haven for korean spambots. Ha! Beat me to it! That's why I quit going to Beth net, nothing like logging onto their forums and having 4 - 5 pages of Korean Spam.
Deleted53045781User
As opposed to having none protection at all, captcha is a great option, if not two-step verification via e-mail or phone numbers. Even 40% chance is better than 0%
waspdeath
I'd rather have email verification than the captcha.
Arthmoor
Email validation is already in place for new accounts. That has no power against bots though because they have pools of valid addresses to use for spam.
Jyotai
~ so you mean.. beth net? A haven for korean spambots. Ha! Beat me to it! That's why I quit going to Beth net, nothing like logging onto their forums and having 4 - 5 pages of Korean Spam. I haven't been there but yeah... that sounds about right. And given how often I have to remove viruses from the computers of my Korean inlaws... not too surprising that they suffer from a lot of bot companies. Korea's a more advanced country - so I could see bots targeting them. They've got more money and more tech than the rest of us and so hackers try to go after and steal it... Oh yeah... and email verification. Go and make a new gmail account - you can make them by the dozens. And if you have your own ISP, you could just write some code to spin out 100,000 new email addreses per minute... You CAN code through captcha, they've even figured out how to hack 2-factor now (but it requires using a kidnap van parked near the wifi router that is processing your 2-factor, if somebody's got a kidnap van parked outside your house, your login credentials are not your biggest concern) - but every bit of effort makes you a less likely target. Why write code to hack through your captcha when the guy 'down the block' is unsecured?
mach1991
the new captcha system that replaced the google version if google isnt trusted in noscript is a TOTALY BROKEN MESS !!!!!!!! Its in times EVEN WORSE then the old google captcha. the visual picture and the audio are totally mismatching and in many cases regardless if the audio or the picutres info as used it always came out as Captcha fails. Well thats it gone ditch nexus from now on.(Well at least until i have cooled down a bit, literally trying for ages to finally be able to log in) REMOVE THIS CAPTCHA NOW !!! the only people thats getting targeted by this are the normal users while modtheft etc still occurs on other site. really that mess reeks to my like the entire denuvo mess system. broken as heck. often cracked. normal users punished and still in it ....... really that needs to stop ASAP at least here on nexusmods. it a reall pain in the ***
