IMHO, MO2 is the go to. You don't have to use all these fancy schmancy tabs and rules and yada yada. Just install your mod. Then move it up and down in your load order wherever you want.

There's no question that MO2 is a fine and powerful mod manager. But, as Rattledagger has pointed out, conflict resolution becomes less efficient the more conflicting mods you have. For years I used MO (the mother of MO2), whose conflict resolution system is embedded in MO2. I used it mainly for a Skyrim setup of approximately 250 mods. For that situation file conflict resolution with MO was vastly superior to anything extant at the time. Today, however, it would not hold a candle to what Vortex is capable of for heavily modded games.

I wanted to add, although I tip my hat to what the Vortex team is trying to do, there is nothing - no program at all - that can replace the need for gamers to learn how to mod correctly.

The developers of Vortex would fully agree with you. They have never, ever claimed that Vortex heralds the end of and need for educated modding. The claim that it does so is fake news that circulates widely in some quarters. Rather than dismissing the need for educated modding, Vortex promotes it by requiring the user to make informed choices about load order and file conflict resolution when those problems arise. This also allows for a more efficient use of modding expertise because Vortex saves the modders' time and energy by quickly alerting them to what needs fixing and what does not.

I get why people are sticking to NMM, not just for nostalgia and familiarity, but because it functions better than the new shiny Vortex.

NMM "functions better" because it doesn't bother people with "annoying" information about what's going on "under the hood." It's the mod manager for lemurs going over the cliff.

because it's backed by Nexus and has sparklies.

Vortex sparkles because it's a diamond among mod managers.

Finally, Vortex supports many more games than just those from Bethesda. Currently I'm playing Witcher 3 (an absolutely superior piece of game craftsmanship), and Vortex manages it quite well.

Yes, I am an unabashed fan of Vortex, just as you are of MO2. My enthusiasm for Vortex arises from twelve years of modding experience using a wide variety of mod managers.

However, when all is said and done, de gustibus non est disputandum. (That's Latin for, "But hey, whatever floats yer boat.")

I'm too lazy right now to do all the fancy quotations from bits and pieces of all your posts.

Firstly, yes, I absolutely know that Vortex is spearheaded by Tannin.

Secondly, as to all the comments about the better capabilities of Vortex to sort mod conflicts, I'll just stick to xEdit. That's what that tool is built for, and I have control over it. I appreciate that Vortex has a similar functionality, but again, the trade off is that you have the more complex time of arranging your plugins the way you want. You have to make rules and such, and I'd rather just be able to manually place things where I want and tweak the mod files, etc.

Augusta, I agree with you, whatever floats yer boat! ;)

You're clearly not understanding what making RULES in the MOD tab are about then.

It's an extremely fast way to designate which Texture/Mesh gets shown in the game

Xedit edits the ESPs, Vortex can sort the BA2s, BSA, Textures and Meshes, so the minimum amount of fiddling with the ESPs is necessary.

Obsessing over the ESPs, is ingrained by NMM. where you're somewhat misled on believing that sorting the ESPs solves EVERYTHING such as Meshes and Textures being overwritten/overwriting.

Just a quick observation. It seems most people posting here, don't seem to grasp the difference between MODS and PLUGINS. The MODS tab can be at the whole mods level or you can set before/after rules for each and every individual file within each conflicting MOD. Whereas, the PLUGIN tab is only for plugins (no assets) and utilizes LOOT to sort. However, you can TURN OFF auto-sorting (LOOT) if you so desire and never have to deal with it.

There seem to be two types of folks in our world. Facts based and faith based.

I am not sure providing facts to the latter helps. It is literally easier for them to hold onto preconceived notions. Facts threaten their world view.

Good summary though. It would go well in the WIKI.

On the contrary, with MO2 (my personal choice of MM and everyone has theirs) the MODS are on the left, everything you install, where just the PLUGINS are on the right. And since you can double click open any of your MODS you can manage each individual file the way you want. As for BSAs, those would have to be extracted first in order to work with the individual files within them. You're saying Vortex can look inside those without them being extracted? And you can decide which individual files (textures, meshes, etc.) should or should not be installed/overwritten? I find that hard to believe, but if you say it is so, then that's a handy feature indeed.

I seem to be in the minority when it comes to getting Vortex to actually work. I just cannot get to install the simplest of mods. The one I absolutely cannot get to install is the "Ami Asian Preset". I have tried and tried but nothing. If anyone might have a solution I would appreciate it. I really like the mod and feel it would be a good addition to my presets.
