probably just another attempt to force nonpremium users to buy premium

In that case a very poor attempt. The site is slow as molasses and has been for long.

Makes me wonder if their new changes with timers to make it like those file download sites is adding to the latency. Maybe bugged implementation that's slowing everything down and/or related to the additional page requests because there are more screens to click through now (and timers to track).

Either way the lag is making downloads constantly timeout in MO2.

Just bought a premium membership and I'm still getting 40Kb/s on my downloads. There is something I should know?

The 'something you should know" is that the ENTIRE SITE, for ALL Members, Premium or Not, has been running extremely slow, sometimes even timing out.

This has been going on since around Christmas.

Nobody is even commenting on it. This is the only thread about it and there are 10 posts about it from the past week. The site barely works at times and sometimes is completely down and there is nothing but silence from the users.

The heavy new year's eve dining must have gotten to your eyesight. The Vortex forum is bulging from the complaints from downloaders who can't get their fix. Like HadToRegister mentioned, it's with ups and downs which makes me surmise it has to do with the implementations that are being made. Adding new links and some such to the navigation overhaul that has been going on the last week or so. For the moment, things are back to normal it seems.
