Vindekarr
Not a Movie, but I just watched two episodes of Star Trek(original series, first season) with my family, and I was absolutely astonished by what they achieved, when. Without a big budget or spectacular effects to fall back on, it instead relied on robust plot, some very decent acting, and interesting concepts and situations, rather than action. As someone who's only recently gotten into startrek via Next Generation, I was surprised at just how different-and yet how fundamentally similar the two series are: there's a general style that translates perfectly between the two-you couldn't mistake either for any but a Star Trek, and yet thematically, they're completelly different. This old series struck me as a bit darker-it had a LOT more violence/death/destruction, and yet that didn't feel gratuitous or thuggish. The other thing that I was taken aback by was the multiethnic, and even multinational cast-I can't begin to image how forward this must have felt when it was new(I assume circa 1970) at the time when the civil rights movement-and feminism were still ongoing and the commonly accepted views of society were much less accepting or reasoned. I was also surprised how some of the technology seemed almost prophetic-the communicators, excluding the transparent wireframe/glass design, are almost identicle to current-gen mobile phones, complete with flip screen and touchpad. Other devices show amazing ressemblances to home computers, modern tablet PCs, aswell as concepts such as flat screen monitors. All of which refferencing technology that would not emerge for decades yet. I was totally impressed-there's absolutely nothing on telly in Australia at the moment so at behest I found some stuff at the Uni library to watch-feels like a bloody good decision now. Stood weel on it's own feet as a TV show, while also being fun portal into a very very different age.

I love the original series it was unique for it's release time (1966) but I've just started watching the next generation and I'm really enjoying it much more. AliasTheory
The Dark Knight Rises. I actually thought it was a great film overall. I'm sure many people did. What I didn't like though was how Bane died so quickly after Catwoman totally gunned him down. He stood as this somewhat omnipotent threat early in the film, so if anything, I wanted Batman to finally triumph and defeat him, with Bane having a better way out; Bane was basically blasted out of the picture and that was the last we saw of him. Nevertheless, the rest of the movie shined. If you have to use the bathroom during this long movie, go at the beginning. You don't want to miss the end. Nolan leaves some sense of ambiguity at the end, in typical fashion.

TheBrownCow
Watched The Dark Knight Rises like two weeks ago. Pretty amazing movie I have to say.. I'd recommend it to anyone, even if your not a particular fan of batman, even I don't really care for him but this movie was just epic. The beginning is a bit slower, but the middle and end is blasted full of action. They left it really open for another movie, however, not with batman as the main focus.
