Big changes for the Nexus Mod Manager and the introduction of Tannin42, our new head of NMM development

Looking forward to the new NMM. The only thing I really want to see is a more stable updating process. Literally every time I have updated NMM, I had to reinstall 90% of my mods. I would love to be able to keep everything up to date without having to sit around re-downloading mods for hours.

Hopefully this doesn't come off as rude, so I apologize if it does.

Might be fine for a good chunk of people, and that's ok, but it won't be for me. I'd honestly rather stick to an alpha version of Mod Organizer than use a mod manager without that VFS again, it was just too good of a feature to go back to not using.

Yes I'm aware my opinion isn't worth the dirt on most people's boots but I'm sharing it either way, just to get it out there into the void.

I wish you all the best regardless, hope it turns out well.
Arthmoor wrote: And conversely, many people won't touch it if the VFS is a core feature that can't be turned off. Which is why it should be offered as an extension module for those who want it. That keeps everyone happy.

I am one of the hardcore MO users for years. My only takeaway from NMM is hours and hours of reinstalling trashed games. That said I am going to simply wait and see. Tannin has consistently produced a great Mod tool and has even mentioned a virtual system "Option" or extension. I would like to see community input taken into consideration and given the track record for both Tannin and Robin I feel sure we will.

That said remember, Tannin produced a great product as a hobby, now as a paid project he will have MUCH more in the way of options and help so it can only get better.

I've been avoiding MO since I like to physically see the files in my folder annnnd I was worried I wouldn't be able to edit them in the CK with MO.

I'd love to be able to have the benefits of MO while still keeping my files accessible so I can edit them if I feel like it.

Not to mention my animations are not from one mod either, I've taken single files across several mods to use my favorite animations from each mod since some mods have great combat animations but no sprinting with weapons drawn animations that suit my taste.

I've avoided switching since I feared having a virtual install might get in the way of that and of course because I'd have to reinstall everything.

I hope you really will be able to combine all the features.

I suspect the best way to approach it would be allow the user to possibly turn on and off any and all features as well as during the first installation an option to choose NMM simple interface or MO complex interface as your default.

Although, I'm sure you've already thought of that.

I was late getting around to using MO for Skyrim. It's been great. You can physically see the files in your Skyrim folder if you installed MO there. It's under a different path though. Mod Organizer>Mods

And you can access the files just fine. I manually, and also through MO, mess around with the mod files all the time, can't help myself. I combined and edit files from mods with no problem. Making sure to have backups of course. And you can run Creation Kit, Wrye Bash and TESVEdit through MO just fine.

I can't currently think of any of my own that would befit such a tool that hasn't already been posted up here, so instead for now until my brain kicks in, I'm going to give a solid acronym for Thallassa's idea.

N.O.M.M = Nexus Official Mod Manager

I have to say, other than jumping through hoops to get MO to function properly due to various bugs and whatnot, MO is NOT more complicated to use than NMM. In fact, I find it simpler. Install, download and install your mods, check the box, play the game. Couldn't be simpler. In addition, your install folder doesn't get messed up, and you don't have to periodically re-install the game because of uninstalling mods that replaced key game components.

NMMs current "vfs" is nowhere near what we enjoy with MO. Hardlinks? Really? An imperfect "patch," if that.

Looking forward to seeing the new and improved MO 3.0! Er, I mean... NMM... (nah, it's really MO 3.0)
Dark0ne wrote:

More people login to NMM to download Skyrim mods each month than have downloaded MO through the entire course of its life on the Nexus. MO is indeed popular, especially with the active users in the community who actually comment (but who represent a small fraction of the total user base of the site). But the majority are still using NMM.

While I understand you said you download MO through GitHub and therefore your download stats won't have been added to the Nexus (although, if you downloaded MO at least once from the Nexus, it will have been counted), I'd wager that there are more people who use NMM without logging in each month (whose stats, likewise, wouldn't be counted) than there are people who download MO from GitHub rather than through the Nexus, so it balances that discrepancy out.

This doesn't negate what else you've said in your post. It just seems to be a common myth that MO is more widely used than NMM, which simply isn't true.

It's most probably not, as you say, more widely used. The main reason I'd like to argue is that quite frankly people do not know about MO. You got NMM as an easy to access link at the top while you have to kind of know about MO's existence beforehand to use it. This means most new users will end up using NMM in their first go.

And since different users wants different options what I'd love to see is an option, like a switch that goes "Turn On vfs" that uses the MO's system. This would give both sides the option to use what they like.

I think you are making a mistake joining a group who is eager to bend a knee to the corporate beast that had attempted and continue to seek to destroy our modding community.

I for one am sad this happened but hope you have sufficiently legally protected yourself and your intellectual property.

I stand corrected, re-reading the OP I see now that you already stated this. Somehow I must have skipped over it. Apologies.

A switch or something along those lines is exactly what we need. I dislike it when people say that something needs to be one thing or the other. Why not both? Unless there is a technical reason, of course.

Exactly NMM has cost me hours destroying my games to the point where reinstall was the only option.
