I just tried Vortex and didn't care for it AT ALL. It claims to be simpler to use, but I found it just the opposite, far more steps involved, especially if using a script extender.

It has a pretty UI, and I like that Loot is built in, but IMO it's just easier to use standard NMM and the Loot app separately myself

How so?

The Script Extender goes in the dashboard, you set it as PRIMARY, then after that all you need to do is start your game and it runs the script extender automatically after that.

I'd be interested in seeing what you're doing that you think that using a script extender is such a chore

Also when you say "Far more steps involved" what do you mean exactly?

I press Download, then I press INSTALL

If there's a conflict I click More, then pick LOAD BEFORE or LOAD AFTER, and I'm done.

Oh I'm sure starting off with it is fine, to be more specific, I'm talking about switching to Vortex from NMM, it's a huge PITA to migrate.

As far as the script extender goes, I'm referingto this: https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Tool_Setup:_Script_Extenders

It's not hard, just a lot more steps involved. My experience has been using mods in my established games is just quicker and easier in NMM than Vortex.

Edit: Plus if Loot is built it, you shouldn't have to set load orders yourself

You don't HAVE to set load orders by yourself, as I said, the only order you need to set is the MODS (textures. Meshes, BA2, BSA etc, Loot doesn't sort those, it only sorts the PLUGINS (IE ESPs)

NMM doesn't handle the load order of BSA, BA2, Textures and Meshes, but Vortex does.

The only time you have to set load order, is when Vortex notifies you that two or more MODS (not PLUGINS) have the same Textures or Meshes and which one do you want to have priority.

I don't know who wrote that Wiki article but it's wrong, there's no need to add a Script extender to the load order.

Just unzip like you always do in the game directory, and the Dashboard should automatically detect it and add it as a tool.

Don't follow that Wiki article, it just adds to the confusion.

That guide shows you how to add SKSE as an actual "mod" to your mod list (so it shows in your mod list) rather than it being manually installed and maintained outside of the mod manager. You can still install it manually.

No problem. Vortex changes the process in which people mod -- focusing on the actual conflicts that need resolving in order for your game and mods to work, and reducing the need to micromanage unnecessarily (i.e. the "I think this mod needs to load before that mod, even though they don't conflict and there's no reason why it should" issue). Thus, there was no way Vortex wouldn't have a learning curve for those individuals who modded their games extensively with NMM (or MO).

If you are not prepared for that, or didn't have the time or energy to approach Vortex and modding in a new light, then it will be hard. That's why we highly recommend users only switch (1) if they want to and/or (2) on a new playthrough with a fresh start.

Sorry for asking this here but I didn't want to open a new topic just to ask that...

Vortex supports multiples downloads??? It needs to be enabled or something? I know free users are limited to 1mb but its supposed to be limited to one download at a time as well?

I'm finally giving it a try over NMM (which supports multiple downloads) and that for me is essential.

Yes, Vortex only downloads 1 file at a time. NMM would download 5 at a time for normal users, but would hap-hazardly split the download speed (1MB/sec) between all 5 files. Vortex instead focuses on getting each file at the fastest speed possible.
